Grégoire Blanc - Thereminist

Post by cuttime »

IMHO, there are only two living "real" Thereminists today, Grégoire Blanc and Carolina Eyck. Blanc's intonation is the best I've ever heard. Now there's this:

Eban Schletter in L.A. is an excellent player (and a DP user as well).

Given that there are so few great practitioners, I have always assumed it must be too hard to play well, even for those who have very good ears (one of my few strengths), so I have depended on samples and sometimes my custom sine wave patches on my Moog Minimoog Voyager.

They're pretty cheap though (even the pro version of Moog's Theremin). Do either of you know if it's worth it? Too bad I never tried the one that a former bandmate had (it was the non-pro kit version from Moog).

There's nothing quite like that sound, and it fits the bill in a lot of circumstances, but of course is a specialty sound and probably why so few play it. Presumably it needs the dedication of being one's primary instrument, based on what I learned many years ago in that documentary.

I've seriously considered taking the Theremin up, but after investigating what is involved (the Rockmore method) I decided to stick with mangling keyboards, instead.

I bought a completed one of those offered as a kit for my daughter—I forget the brand. Guess what? It can be played one-armed.
