DP RAM Buffer Size

Post by mindswerve »

i have 32GB of RAM installed in my system, yet, the DP Setup Menu-> Audio System -> Configure Hardware driver-> Buffer Size setting won't allow me to go higher than 4096.
could have sworn i've seen 8192 in the past....
i run a LOT of virtual instruments in my project playback,
how can i access higher buffer settings?

(yes i lower the buffer settings for less delay to track an instrument,
but raise them back up to be able to play everything in the project during mixing)

i selected the "built in output" since it gives me a higher RAM buffer setting (currently 4096)
than my Traveler (of which 1024 is the only selectable option)

mac specs below in my signature.
thanks for your help!

Not sure to understand correctly.
AFAIK, max buffer size is audio hardware related.
BTW, of course, high buffer size is for mixing, but unusable for tracking VIs cause of latency.

There was a setting called something like a buffer multiplier that you could use if you have multiple devices. I don't know if it is still there, or whether it actually increases the buffer size, but you might try it if you think this is the problem.

BTW, the max buffer size would have nothing to do with the amount of RAM you have.

i updated my question above.
still looking to know how to select HIGHER than 4096.
i have 32GB of RAM, it's a shame to not be able to apply it to all my virtual instruments being run

Your virtual instruments will take as much memory as they need to load samples all the way to just shy of your 32 gig. You can check each VI as to how it loads/utilizes memory. The playback buffer is used for preloading audio to relieve stress on the processor when it can't handle real time demands - something like that. It doesn't determine how your ram space is utilized.

Again, buffer size has nothing to do with the amount of RAM assigned to your virtual instruments. If you can change RAM assignment, it will be a setting in the specific instruments.

Note that the buffer size of 4096 is 4 kilobytes. Your RAM is 8 million times that. In the event that you found a way to assign 16GB to the buffer, that's 16GB that would NOT BE AVAILABLE to the VIs.
