Mac mini 2018 vs Mac Pro 2013 6 core
Hi
I am considering swapping Mac Pro 2013 for a Mac mini. Main reason is using the new TB NVME drives for my sample library (around 4TB). Has anyone here had a chance to compare the two in that respect or otherwise?

I know of older RAID boxes but what are you talking about?

The internet coughed up this. They’re in the latest MBPs. 4 times faster than SATA it says

Ok...
I was hoping for a link to a 4TB NVMe based Thunderbolt 3 drive. I’ve not heard of any and don’t think they exist – yet?
Closest I know is one of these:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB3 ... 64EALw_wcB
Loaded with four NVMe blades, it can give you up to 8TB as JBOD or 4TB in a 2x2 RAID 0 configuration. Unfortunately, the slots are 3 x1 so it can’t take advantage of the speed inherent in fast NVMe 3 x4 blades such as the 970 EVO. Slow, inexpensive blades such as the Intel 660p would be ok.
4 lanes appears to be a limit of the Thunderbolt 3 bus. There is also a 2-blade external enclosure with 3 x2 slots. As fast as it is, with a pair of 2TB blades in it at RAID 0, it won’t be much faster than the X5 below.
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ne ... 359-2.html
If a pair set up JBOD, it will be faster than the OWC but not as fast as two X5s on two busses (2018 Mini and iMac Pro)
Otherwise, the bus powered Samsung X5 has a single blade (970 EVO ) and goes for $800 for 2TB. Being a single blade, it can take advantage of all 4 lanes in the NVMe 3 x4 blade it contains.

How fast do streaming libraries need to be?

Re: Mac mini 2018 vs Mac Pro 2013 6 core
Those are the kind of drives I am looking at. There is also a Chinese one that is much cheaper, a little slow but still very fast. You are right that perhaps it is an overkill. However, I am also looking at upgrading my Mac Pro 2013 4 core. Mac Pro 2019 is too expensive. Hence the Mac mini. And it runs on TB3 so I am already looking at that. My question really concerned the mac, not the drivesmikehalloran wrote:Ok...

Why not swap out the CPU in your nMP?
