New Audio Interface

Post by westla »

So my trusty old 4.1 Mac Pro (2009) is on it's last legs. With the change in my work, since setting up my studio 10 years ago, my needs have also changed. I used to make the majority of my income in film/commercial music, so I needed my 2 2408's, etc. But now I make almost all my income from composing concert music, so my needs are much less. Nowadays, I use DP mainly for cleaning up live recordings, or occasionally recording a scratch track with a musician.

So I'm going to be switching to either a Mac Pro (trashcan), or Mac Mini, so I need a new interface. I'm just staring to think about this, and haven't followed the trends in USB vs. Thunderbolt interfaces.

I'm considering:

MOTU Track 16
Apogee Duet 2
UA Apollo Twin Mk2

Any recommendations? Other interfaces to consider? Is a USB interface "fast" enough, or should I be only looking at Thunderbolt interfaces?

Thanks so much!

USB is fast enough (I have successfully recorded as many as 18 simultaneous tracks while providing 5 monitor mixes via my MOTU 828es and MacPro 5,1 connected via USB), but if absolute minimum latency is needed and the computer and interface support it, TB will do a tad better.

I liked the MOTU AVB line and, having now owned and used an 828es for well over a year, still do.

Not familiar with Audient. So I'm guessing the iD14 would be the equivalent.

I know this is a dumb Q, but what is AVB?

FWIW, I love my Track 16. I actually won it in a raffle at a MOTU event about a zillion years ago and it has been a real champ.

Been doing some reading, and really like the look (and price) of the ID22.

Is it stable and play well with DP?

Very stable interfaces, great pre-amps and DAC converters etc - and a nice big volume knob!
