Safari 10.12.6 update w/ MacOS Security: fairly long install

Post by mhschmieder »

I allowed a Safari security update notice to run tonight, and almost freaked out when it looked like it was upgrading to Mojave instead. This is just an alert to save others the freak-out.

The update takes about ten minutes, reboots the computer three times, and requires you to login more than once before it finally lets you into your account -- just like an OS upgrade tends to behave.

I do not remember previous Safari updates behaving like this. I don't even use Safari, except for websites that won't work anywhere else on macOS. But it seemed harmless to allow it to update.

There are actually two update components. The Safari update for the browser, and the Security Update (which itself affects some aspect of the OS).

Hmm, that didn't show up when I tried to expand the details, but I've been having trouble with the App Store for some time now, regarding sluggishness.
