DP3 OS9 to DP9 Windows 10 - soundbyte format

Post by teratosis »

Hello,

Moved all my DP projects from an old DP3 drive to Windows 10.

All the files file type say "file". I figured out how to rename the project to ".dpdoc". But all my audio files still have no extension.

Here is a screenshot of the Audio Files folder: https://www.screencast.com/t/qfhZODFvuX

My question, I remember the audio files being sound designer back in the day. What extension do I need to add to these files so DP will read them?

Thank you.

If they are SD files DP might not be able to read them. I'm not sure, but you might just find a conversion program and make them all wav or aiff files. If that is, in fat, the case, you might have to place them manually in the sequences. That would probably suck!

DP still supports Sound Designer II files, which, I think have a ".sd2" suffix. I started with DP 4 -- maybe DP 3 used an earlier version. Anyway, you could try adding that suffix to the file names and DP9 might recognize them.

Also, IIRC, this format had separate files for left and right channels, so there might have to be a ".R" or a ".L" somewhere in the name to distinguish Right from Left. Of course you could just treat these as mono files and sort it out inside DP. This would probably be properly described somewhere if you did a search for "Sound Designer format".

Your signature shows 9.51. Upgrade to 9.52 if you haven’t done so. Among the many fixes is the capital letters in file extensions such as SD2 / sd2 along with WAV vs wav. Finally!

OS 8 and earlier normally hid extensions in a way that other OS sometimes cannot read. If DP for Win cannot read these, there are batch conversion apps that should be able to strip the headers and write new ones. Being uncompressed, the raw audio is unchanged.

The ultimate issue I ran into was, I transferred all my DP3 projects over a network to my Windows box. I moved and the original drive from the Mac was stolen in shipping.

The transferred files from what I can ascertain, lost the file extension and the headers. Simply adding the ".sd2" extension did not work. I loaded them through a file conversion program to convert them to wave, but they came out playing too fast, tried changing the sample rate of the wave in Sound Forge, but could never get them back. If you guys have a recommended conversion app, I'll try that.

Thanks.

Are you working on copies of the files you transferred via network? If so, zip and unzip the originals. That works sometimes.

Playing too fast normally means that these were done at 44.1 and you are now running 48k. If so, create a project at 44.1 and drop the files in. Or, reconvert at 44.1.

Did you update to DP 9.52?

This is fixable.
