My Confusion around assigning Main Outputs / Default outputs

Post by tonomud »

I'm sure this issue is just a setting that I have incorrectly applied somewhere, but thought I'd post anyway, as I didn't see a similar thread anywhere.

Bought an 896mk3 about 6 months ago. Works great. Using it with DP 9.52. I switched to a new iMac (running 10.12.6) a little over a month ago, and am having a nagging issue that I can't seem to figure out.

In the MOTU Audio Setup app, I have my "Main Out Assign" set to "Main Out 1-2" on the 896. Actually, for clarity's sake, here's a screenshot of those settings:

So, when I create a new track in DP, it assigns the output to "Analog 1-2". See screenshot of a sample project I just created here:

So, as expected, when the playhead moves, the meters in DP appear active, but no sound comes out of my "Main Out 1-2" because everything in DP is being routed through "Analog 1-2". I can change the output assignments in DP to "Main Out 1-2" and everything works. But as soon as I create a new track, the default output is still "Analog 1-2". I poked around in the preferences, and searched the DP manual, but didn't find any clues.

What am I missing here? I'm sure this is a simple mistake on my part, but I can't seem to figure it out. Anybody?

It looks like your answer is right there in front of you. Change the 3rd and 4th entries in your MOTU audio setup, where it reads DEFAULT Stereo Output/Input, change them to whatever you like.

That should do it.
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Ok, I just changed them to the following values:

I quit DP, restarted DP, created new blank project, created a new mono track, stereo track and master fader. Here's what I'm seeing:

Still showing the same Analog 1-2 outputs. What am I doing wrong?

thanks, that did the trick. I have never opened that before...I assume it gets setup initially (on the first run of DP, or setup of new MOTU hardware) based on how things are set in the MOTU Audio setup app? My guess is that for some reason I had the 896 setup with the Audio 1-2 as the default output in the MOTU audio setup app when I first setup the interface. Then, when I realized and switched, the default had already been set, despite the fact that I had later changed the settings.

At any rate, thank you. I now have a better idea for how to deal with such things if/when needed in the future.
