how to correctly set preamp gain?

Post by arjepsen »

Hey.
I have an 1248 that I'm starting to use as a live mixer with my band.
I'm trying to set the preamp gain for the mics, but am a little confused.
On analog equipment you'd usually set the gain so the levels are just reaching the yellow indicators every now and then.
But how to set it in the 1248? I can't see any helpful indicator as to how high to set it, and it seems distortion happens in a gradual manner, making it difficult to find a spot that is high enough, but doesn't clip. Also I find it difficult to precisely match levels between singers.
How do you guys do it?

Regards
Anders

If you are having trouble getting enough gain before distortion on any individual channels, turn the gain down on ALL the inputs and bring up your master, either on the MOTU or on the amps receiving the MOTU output.

The loudness of different voices is perceived differently. More Harmonics/Noise = Louder Sounding for any given power level. As such, precisely balancing the volumes of singers is best done by ear; the meters can only tell you so much.
