Charlie Puth -Attention
This song has gotten way too much air play on the Boston pop stations and I've heard it on my less-than-adequate car radio too many times, but I just listened to the Youtube video and even with the crappy Youtube audio, I thought it was a superb recording. I'm not talking about the song (or the pitch correction)- just the recording and mix. Waddiya think?

Re: Charlie Puth -Attention
Hard to judge. Is that what they were going for? If so, then it's a good recording. Personally, I don't like the concept, but if that concept is rendered the way they conceived of it, then what can I say? The world will survive without my opinion.

Like the Kurt Vonnegut character who had mastered the techniques of painting but had nothing to say?

Re: Charlie Puth -Attention
I like the opening but it doesn't get developed into the song. The audio production is well balanced, clean, perfectly quantized, punchy, and the overall effect is artistically boring to my ears. Very "dancy" and I suppose it is/will be popular and make money. Good for them! Really. For my part, I prefer something with a bit more "meaning."
Thanks, Mr. Phil

Re: Charlie Puth -Attention
Yeah, like I said - don't listen to the production or song development, just the recording quality. I like the clarity of the sounds, the reverb selection, in your face vocals, the bass sound, the punchy drums, etc. I'm talking about the technical aspects, not the artistic. Artistically I agree it's lacking. I should have been clearer in my OP. Perhaps I should have posted in the gear section.

Yes, very well recorded. Impeccable engineering. I got Michael Jackson flashbacks.

Nice. Doesn't sound any better to my ears than any Britney/Gaga/Bruno/Katy record. This is just the current thang.

This song "Hollywood Freaks" is awesome, but that whole album is an astonishing magic trick of studio sorcery. I've been listening to it on heavy rotation for a year or more, and it never fails to inspire.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Very nice production! My son gave me that album for a birthday, because he felt I needed to hear it. And he was, as usual, correct.

I don't have kids that they know of. Maybe that's why I'm wrong so often?

I think it's great Phil. Nice arc in a very tight arrangement, and each element has its distinct place in the mix. Lyrics are typical, but this is a pop song and has merit, in its own space, despite what those too hip to admit it may say.Phil O wrote:This song has gotten way too much air play on the Boston pop stations and I've heard it on my less-than-adequate car radio too many times, but I just listened to the Youtube video and even with the crappy Youtube audio, I thought it was a superb recording. Thanks HC. Like I said in my OP, it's getting way too much air play and its artistic flaws become more and more apparent every time I hear it, but there was something about the recording that made me investigate further.
