Does anyone have a short 5.1 mix, deemed to sound good, they could send me? Or a link to one online somewhere. Ideally something like a trailer.
I'm set up for building 5.1 effects in my home studio, but a client wants a quick rough mix to play back in a theatre. I'd normally final something like this at a dubbing stage because my setup isn't at all calibrated for theatrical mixing. If I had good surround mix of something I'd at least be able to get my mix in the ballpark.
Thanks for any help you can offer!

I have a war scene form a movie I did in 2008. The surround is pretty good IMO. The entire movie is over 2 hours, but i could probably excerpt the war scene for you and deliver it in DP format. I'd kist have to dig it off the HD and find a few minutes to extract the war. there's also a musical section with VO at a sendoff for the WW 1 guys in the film. Two or three marching bands at once, a steam engine, crowds, politician speech, lead character VO, all in wonderful 5.1.
You can hear the trailer collage here:

A little over compressed by IMDB, but whatever...

If it's not too much trouble, that'd be great MLC! Among other things that would tell what level to make the files for delivery. ...or you could could just advise me on that. -10db seems to be a safe level. That's what the internet says.

Re: Surround Reference Mix
Hey, MLC. I just heard from a film mixer friend who offered to let me QC my project in his calibrated studio. A ref file from you would still be useful, but my need isn't so great now.
Thank you so much! You're humble and lovable.

Who you been talking to?! LOLdix wrote:You're humble and lovable.
This might be helpful:
http://sound.stackexchange.com/question ... ing-levels
When I mix for TV the broadcasters general want to see an average level around -10db. One thing to watch out for... unless you want to (or need to for artistic purposes) place dialogue specifically in the stereo or 5.1 field, keep your dialogue CENTER. Also remember, for broadcast, they'll be compressing the crap out of it, so try and use as little compression as possible.
If you're covered for a reference, I got plenty to do here. I generally check MN and Facebook on my breaks (about once an hour unless something on the internet is incorrect... )

Re: Surround Reference Mix
Thanks! I'm good. No real need for the ref. Lotsa good stuff in that Wiki!
