Upgrade OS from 10.10.5 ?
I just updated to DP9.02 on my Mac which is still running OS 10.10.5.
I use a ton of VIs and Plugs (all NI, VEPro 6, Waves, Spectrasonics, Soundtoys etc etc). Is there any reason for me to update my OS to the latest (or other), or do you guys think that 10.10.5 will be stable over the near future?...
thnx

I don't have the same plugs, but 10.12.3 (Sierra) has been very stable for me. Even Finale is running again! It has dies completely in the earlier OS - whatever the hell they called that one.

Two different issues.Chris T wrote:I just updated to DP9.02 on my Mac which is still running OS 10.10.5.

The first, if everything works and is stable, why change? If DP is your main application, you may want to leave it alone. Some of us find that Sierra is more stable and faster than Yosemite. YMMV. There are serious security issues that cannot go away without updating the OS.
The second is that not every current app works with OS 10.5. If you have an iPhone or iPad and want to sync apps, Yosemite is two versions behind. Sierra has the latest security updates; many are not compatible with Yosemite.
You may have some old apps and plugins that will no longer be compatible. Ask around if you have some—many times there are workarounds. Very few apps won't work if already installed and the OS is upgraded although some can no longer be installed. DP 7.24, Office 2008 and Finale before 2014 are three such examples: they work on my iMac but only because they were installed in Yosemite or earlier.

I start to worry when browser support starts to fall away, leaving more potentially open doors for the nefarious web lurker.
Just ask the CIA.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see a slew of security updates from our favorite software vendors in the coming days and weeks.

Run any old OS you want. Connecting that computer to the internet is not a very good idea these days.

Re: Upgrade OS from 10.10.5 ?
I updated from 10.10.5 to 10.12.3 last week, running DP 9.02. The update did something to my user account, making it a standard, rather than an admin account, making it impossible for me to access some system preferences. After a couple of hours with apple support, I gave up and installed Sierra again. It seems to be OK now. It's no more or less stable, faster or slower, than 10.10. A few plugins had to be updated.
If you don't need to run something that needs a later OS version, I wouldn't bother. I updated to be able to run the most recent version of Logic.

I had something similar happen when I swapped out my Quad Core to a 6-Core CPU.bayswater wrote:I updated from 10.10.5 to 10.12.3 last week, running DP 9.02. I stumbled across right clicking on my primary startup drive to "Get Info". That brought up the window that shows "Sharing and Permissions" at the bottom. I had to "re-authorize" myself to be able to "Read & Write".
(Had to click the locked icon and enter password to make these changes.)
You may already know this, but I thought I'd share.

Yes, thanks, I tried that, but it wasn't just a permissions problem. The install created a partition with no Admin user account. I probably could have gone into Terminal as the Root user and created an account, but it seemed easier to click on Install and go for coffee.buzzsmith wrote:

Re: Upgrade OS from 10.10.5 ?
I'd say you're at least safe to upgrade to El Capitan, which is what I'm running and is rock-solid, but since Apple doesn't believe in letting you choose how to upgrade anymore, you'll most likely be forced to upgrade to Sierra or stay put. If it helps, I did a test upgrade a while back and didn't notice a lot of difference between Sierra and El Capitan for the brief time I was on it -- I mainly rolled back to El Capitan because Tech Tools Pro 8 no longer works on it (and 9 had just come out and wasn't ready for Sierra yet) and I had to upgrade Quicken. I'll probably attempt another upgrade here shortly and get my six months of use out of Sierra before the next OS comes out to screw everything up again. Sigh.

Sierra has been just fine for me. Maybe even more stable than El Cap. The only issues I have run into are WiFi MIDI networking, and I found a solution.

Re: Upgrade OS from 10.10.5 ?
Sierra is WAAAAY more better. Finale DID NOT WORK in El Cap. It works (F2014.5) in Sierra. Just in time for a commission! Whew! If that came in 6 months ago I'd be scrambling for a PC that could run Finale.
Eventually I will put Sierra on my 3.1 cheese grater 8-core. It is the last machine that will take the upgrade. I like to use that in the winter when it gets cold in the studio... LOL

Stop allowing Flash Player to run is a start. It was supposed to be gone completely by Jan. 2017 but that clearly hasn't happened.HCMarkus wrote:I start to worry when browser support starts to fall away, leaving more potentially open doors for the nefarious web lurker.
In my job, I can't do that as some state web sites still use it. OTOH, I am set up so that it never runs without me giving express permission on a case by case basis. A bit of a PIA, I know but I have to access way too many unknown sites to do it any other way.
