How do I show only certain tracks in the Raven mixer. In DP we have mixer layouts and now in DP 9 we have track Layouts too, which show or hide desired trks. I have 450+ trks in my orch template and am always switching to see only the strgs, or precussion etc. How do I make the Raven mixer mirror what is seen in DP?
Currently the Raven will not do it. I asked early on. "I'm not sure it's something Mackie Protocol can do" according to JameyZ at Slate. It would be nice if it would follow DP folders etc. So what I do on large track projects is pull the whole folder for whatever groups of instruments to the top of the TO and they come up on the left of the mixer. 450 tracks is 21... 24 channel groups. DP will follow Raven mixer. I find the floating mixer is all I use until everything is done. Then I just big mixer just for balance mix and the icons. The long throw faders are awesome. I think it's time to ask MOTU to consider a Raven layout for the gui. I think MOTU could do the code that when you hide folders etc. Mackie protocol does not see them. If only what is in the DP mixer or TO window could be sent to the Raven it would be killer. I suspect sooner then later DP will come out with a touch screen mixer. Until then it's the Raven for me...

Thanks for your great input Waxman!

I spoke to Jamey and he said to talk to Motu. So I did, and they confirmed that it is something they (meaning Motu) needs to address in how they publish the track layouts down the pipe thru Mackie Control. The young tech at motu sent an email to confirm that he went away form out call, and was gonna talk with Magic et al. Got email later friday that they were able to get correct layout publishing to work with another DAW, so it is possible for them to do too. Hopefully that is not only do-able, but done soon.

What size custom icons are you using on the mti2 Waxman and other folks?

I want to make some that actually have text on them. (due to the hui 8 character limitation) Any suggestions on how to best do that?

I go on google images. Type what you want and click images. Then to tools and choose "Exactly". I put in 240 It helps to have square pics. Save the image to desktop. Double click and open in preview. Change size to 60x60 pixels then do word layover using annotate. I found this guitar link below. It will look good in the icons. You can do the same with acoustics etc. I'll send you a few on the slate site they let you upload pics.

I have to put the pics once edited in the Icon browser Custom Folder but it is pretty fast. I don't know if you put them straight in the Custom folder in the library if they will show up. Give it a try and let me know. I have over 100 icons. I spent a whole afternoon finding, editing and importing. I wanted to get it out of the way. I think it is brilliant to have Icons on the big Raven mixer. I wish they were on the floating mixer. Way better then reading names.

@waxman

Im looking into the Raven vids for DP.

When using the Mixing Board ... are you actually controlling DP's mixing board or the Raven Mixing board as shown on the vids?

I'm a little confused bc I see his Mixing Board on the Raven isn't DP's mixer.

Not waxman, but loving the Raven.

Raven is designed to use it's mixer, which does indeed move the appropriate fares, pans etc in the DP mixer. But the DP mixer doe snot have to be showing. There are actually 2 Raven mixers. One wonderful long throw fader one, and one mini adjustable one that can float around the screen.

You 'can' use the DP mixer as a touch surface if you like, but it is one touch at a time only. With Raven mixer up to 10 simultaneous faders/pans etc can be used.

Good you noticed. So the Raven Faders control volume and the s/m/r//a on the channel strip also control those functions. The difference is in Logic and PT the Raven is a template overlay. But in short the Raven just sends the same codes to dp that activate changes as the dp interface would. Except it is touch instead of mouse. Regardless of the DP window being open. I don't have DP faders open or the r/s/m/a .

Does the Raven Mixer have scribble strips so you at least know which track you're affecting?

This may be a dumb question ... but on the vids I don't see anywhere in the strips where one can see the track they're controlling.

Yes it works like the Mackie MCU... what ever you name the track in the DP TO window, SE window or mixer window it will do a 6 character name or substitute name if over six characters. And it's BAD. I avoid long track names. So Gtr1, Grt1DI, Synth1, Synth2... etc... If I put something like rough chorus guitars it will be Rggrts or some crap like that. Totally useless. Also it does not like spaces. Guitar Chorus 1... might get you Cr 1 in the scribble strip. Hopefully slate will fix it but it may be a Mackie Protocol problem. And if you rename a track most of the time it will remain the old name until you reboot Raven. Or you can go to controller and open and close.

But what is SO cool is the custom icons. For what it's worth my brain can memorize the pics. I choose icons that match the part and could care less what the track name is. I just wish they would add icons (even little ones if your listening Matt) to floating mixer. If MOTU ever collaborates with Slate the Raven they could have a killer gui. Between the motu mixer and Raven floating mixer being sized the same and decoupling automation from the motu mixer it would kill. They sync when you bank but are also easily independent.

This is the key... It's all a matter of "vertical real estate" on the monitor. Putting the batch commands on an iPad helps. So anyway sorry to go off on the channel strip thing but it is a big part of using the Raven...

The Raven is amazing but you learn to avoid the things it won't do well. It is in no way seamless. But it is a joy to use and most people that take the time to learn it love it. Jim took the time to learn it but did not enjoy it at all... I think I know about 30% of how to use a Raven. Just today I started doing vocal comping on it using touch... definitely cool. Shooshie needs to get one. He would soon have tutorials for us on how to make it cook dinner and do your taxes.
