Really? Hogan's Heros used it more than once with the wire smuggled as thread in clothing. The recorder/player was disguised as a sewing basket.

Could be a way to create one of those "How the heck did you make it sound like THAT?" effects!

Ooooh... especially if you stretch the wire before playback.

I know, someone will come up with a Modeled Distressed Wire Recording plugin but, no matter how close they get it, will never sound the same to those familiar with the real deal, right? For starters, they'd make it stereo...

I had a wire recorder when I was a kid. A neighbour dug it up in his basement. He had used it in PoW interrogations during WW2. I'm sure there will be a plugin emulation soon.

Wire gives instant 1930 transcription disc sound; that Woody Guthrie recording sounds far better than any wire I've ever heard. Super finicky transport, but not that hard to find a working machine. Hard to find any wire spools that aren't hopelessly tangled. Most units will run and play wire, but if you want to record on one beware they should at least have the capacitor to the record head replaced before firing them up as they tend to leak DC with age and take out the record coil. There was a rumor of a guy at one time in the last 2 decades Frankensteining an 8 track wire recorder. You can usually pick up a machine on ebay in the $20-50 range, shipping will run as much again. Most are Webster-Chicago portable suitcase types in the US.

Much more friendly than the steel band recorders, the steel band could break while running at high speed and then you had the equivalent of a razor knife whipping around the room. Probably why they abandoned that one.

Thank goodness Bing Crosby and others had the good foresight to invest in magnetic tape technology, eh? :)

Does anyone remember a format (Dictaphone, maybe?), that used a flexible cylinder that was scribed by a stylus? Blue in color? About 6 x 4 inches? Used in the 60s & 70s?
