WARNING: Latest iTunes update loses edits to "Get Info"

Post by mhschmieder »

Ever since the most recent iTunes update, I am finding that most user edits don't "take", even after several tries.

It doesn't matter if you're editing info for an entire album or just one track.

Sometimes it helps to hit TAB after an edit, move the cursor to another line, maybe hit TAB or ENTER whether blank or not, before committing edits and exiting the "Get Info" window.

Yet I can't find a clear pattern to what works and what doesn't. I thought I had it figured out, then on a classical album last night, even eight tries with different sorts of focus-changing actions before committing, did not persist the edits once exiting "Get Info".

I should have read this before updating just now! Man... what is going on over at Apple these days? Seems like MacOS updates, etc. used to be pretty solid. Sigh...

It does seem like 10.11.6 is the last relatively stable release but what about that darn Security Update! YIKES!

Oh yeah, just to be clear, I'm talking about common fields like Artist and Album Title, much less the Comments section where I tend to list personnel and instruments.

With Classical and Jazz, it is rare that the Grace Notes database info is correct.

Also, album artwork is rarely found for those genres -- especially classical -- so I end up experimenting with variations on potential album titles until the artwork is found.

Sometimes I give up and download an image from Amazon to copy to the album folder on disc and then use Get Info to hook up that artwork to the album.

This is all stuff that is no longer working -- at least reliably -- in the new iTunes.

I have tried even "waiting" a bit after edits, in case it's just "slow".

It's quite weird that even the frame title indicates updates to album titles and the like, but then it disappears and reverts once committing edits and exiting the "Get Info" window.

OTOH I just noticed (accidentally, while debugging system problems) that I still have an expired copy of a Finder extender app that Shooshie recommended a few years back. I thought I'd cleared it off my system ages ago.

I wonder if its presence is affecting things? I'll see if I can find it and get rid of it if possible. I can't re-find the context where its extra menus like "Show Info" showed up. I don't see anything in Applications or Utilities, so it may be a plug-in for Finder.

UPDATE: I found the potentially offending app and deleted it. It's called "Path Finder". But it probably isn't enough to delete the app alone; I'll search now for preferences files and the like.

I was having those problems for a long time. Adding artwork, especially, was some mix of voodoo and wishful thinking. Generally, it only worked if my files were mp3, aac or similar. Apple lossless was hit and miss. Wav, .aif or SDII, forget about it.

For me, the version of iTunes, 12.5.1, released with Sierra fixed everything. The latest update, 12.5.2.35 is working perfectly for me—a real surprise, frankly. I have been editing my library and adding artwork for a few hours now and everything is working.

To verify, I rebooted and opened 20 albums. All are exactly as I left them.

Mike, that's good to hear. It's nice to know that Apple is getting more disciplined with Sierra than they were with El Capitan.

I'll just let it go for now then, as I expect I'll be upgrading to Sierra by year's end. Mostly, I'm waiting on a full confidence report for the RME Fireface UFX compatibility.

It's quite possible. I read some tech papers today and it's a game-changer in terms of software support. I'll bet it's keeping them busy and, er, distracted. :-)

This problem seems to have cleared up -- for pop music, at least -- with the latest security update.

The even newer update from a day or so ago, is preserving all "Get Info" edits, without even having to "pre-commit" via TAB or ENTER.

The only problem I am experiencing with the latest update is that it refuses to stack multi-disc albums as one album, even though they're labeled as 'x" of "y" discs and all info fields match, and even though older uploads still show as one album with multiple discs.

I do notice there's a new checkbox for classical music and other genres where other organizational schemes are preferred, to group things by movement etc.

I haven't checked yet to see whether this works on existing material or only on new uploads.

BTW the reason I use the term "upload" is that I ONLY load CD's and NEVER buy music on-line as I despise lossy compression and that's about all that is sold. Anyway, I like liner notes.
