Sibelius 8

Post by mikehalloran »

With all the discussion about Finale and Sibelius, I was surprised that the release of Sibelius 8 happened without a peep.

These guys seem to have good prices on it including upgrades. The code, ACN201611 gets another 11% off.

I have no interest in the latest version but some might.

That discount code didn't apply to the competitive crossbreed, which is around $170 (and I believe that is more than it had been a year or so ago?).

Unless a short term bargain comes by, I think I'll pass -- especially given the recent round of layoffs at Avid and questions about their future as well as whether they'll go subscription-only.

Even so, the new features and workflow look very useful and much improved.

At the NAMM show, I thought AVID Pro Tools 12.5 looked incredibly strong. I’m surprised there are lay offs. I think 12.5 is the future of DAWs when it comes to net working STRAIGHT into the DAW. If AVID can;t keep going with such a groundbreaking 12.5 release, I am truly fearful for the music industry as a whole.

What’s been going on with AVID lay offs?

The discount code did work for me showing $150 and change for the download.

Not being interested in owning a copy, I didn't complete the sale.

Interesting. maybe you have to create an account with that music sale site first, and then it all works as it did for you.

I did check my notes though, and the lowest I had seen it before was $199. So I'll keep this site in mind should I decide to add Sibelius for project compatibility -- though so far people have only been sending me Finale files (even though Sibelius dominates the SF Bay Area).

Possible — I was logged into my account at the time. In fact, the only thing I've purchased from them was my Finale 2014 upgrade as they had the best price.
. . . (even though Sibelius dominates the SF Bay Area).
Really? Most of my friends use Finale. I do know one who uses Sibelius and another who keeps his G3 working so that he can still use Professional Composer.

When my daughter was going to school in Ireland, she felt quite alone as a Finale user. She wondered if she was the only one in the British Islands. Sibelius does rule there.

Speaking of whom, she is working with Alice Parker and finally gets to meet her in person today. Having sung many Parker and Parker/Shaw arrangements over the years, I am jazzed. Ms Parker turned 90 in December and is still going strong.

Congrats to your daughter. Should be a fun gig.

I guess I'm just thinking how MTT uses Sibelius, and since Avid is just a couple of doors down from my own office, a lot of the more geeky (i.e. non-professional) music hobbyists in SF and East Bay seem to gravitate towards Sibelius just through word of mouth in the tech industry.

Having said that, MTT may be the outlier, because all of the churches I've been involved with are exclusively Finale, and that especially holds for choir arrangements. Those choir directors also tell me that Finale dominates SF Conservatory.

Yes, Michael Tilson Thomas used the original version on the Acorn RISC OS. When Sibelius was ported to Windows, then the Mac, that pretty much spelled the end of Acorn which was too bad but so it goes.

Fortunately, MusicXML 3.1 makes the differences in the final product less of an issue that it used to be. It is easier to use what you want nowadays. Heck, I often knock out the basics in Encore, then export to Finale via XML for everything else.

QuickScribe in DP 9 can now export XML. Perhaps, someday, it may be able to import — that would be huge.

Oh, I didn't know that QuickScribe can't import MusicXML yet -- good to know, so I don't make a false promise to a fellow clarinetist-composer that I may help with mock-ups (also as a learning tool for finally developing a systematic workflow for composition-to-notation-to-MIDI-to-rendering etc.).

Yea, I was hoping.

Yea, I was hoping. Still, export to MusicXML should be a very nice feature for many users.

If XML import ever does happen, it will be huge for me.
