Help Converting Corrupted Files?

Post by noshinchan »

Hi, All. I lost a partition in my hard drive and now have recovered corrupted files. Because of the file sizes, I think the information is still there, but the extensions have changed. My main document files are listed simply as "document" but not DP, and my audio files folder is full of what, from the icons, look like text files. Is there a way I can edit these extensions and/or make these projects readable again? I'm using DP7, though many of the lost files are from DP4.

Do the files have a black/grey rectangle icon with the word 'exec'? If so, it's possible that the recovery was done to an PC fat formatted drive and you lost the file resource forks. If so, if you can have whoever did the recovery recover the files to an HFS+ formatted disk from the original disk and you may get everything back.

Thanks for the reply. The recovery was done on a Mac, and no "exec" boxes visible.

Do they have the .dpdoc file ending? If not try to add that.
What happens if you right click and choose "Open With" then DP? Or drag them unto the DP icon?

Well, adding a .dpdoc extension in the "Get Info" box doesn't appear to change anything. The DP icon stays greyed out when trying "open with".

But, on the other hand, making the extension ".perf" opened it all! Amazing! and thanks for the suggestions. Problem looks to be solved. (Got lost in one recovered tune and just assuming it'll work for the rest.)

Maybe the .dpdoc filename extension is new for DP8?

Good you got it to work though!

Bob, need to know what versions of DP you have. "7" isn't good enough. Trust me on this one. Also, post your OS and if you have versions 5 or 6, post those too including the exact version numbers. I've been through this.
