Melodyne DNA: Is it possible to remove objectionable lyrics?

Post by buzzsmith »

I have a dance studio client that needs a few non-age appropriate words removed from a stereo track for their annual recital.

I've done this before using other techniques, but was just curious if DNA can more easily handle this.

Thanks!

So much depends on content with Melodyne. You may find it works well in some spots, but not in others. But is it possible? Yes.

Thanks, Stephen.

I "salvaged" the song by finding the same progression and non-offensive lyrics and copying/pasting, but I may send you a 10-20 second snippet just for future info.

actually, I don't think DNA will do this effectively, it depends on the material - but Roland R-Mix is pretty good!

I'm still game to give it a shot if you're up for it.... I've got both....

PS I reckon Izotope RX Spectral Repair might be a possibility too....

Cool. I'll send later. Wave or mp3? (15 seconds or so shouldn't be too big.)

Thanks!

Just FYI, it's super-easy to cut out words in a vocal with Melodyne.

Insert Melodyne on the track, click "Transfer" button and start playback
so Melodyne will process it.

When completed, rewind to beginning of track, with Melodyne window open.
Select the "amplitude" tool. Find a blob that represent a word you
want to erase. Place cursor over the blob and double click. The amplitude
of the blob will be reduced to zero.

You can also copy "non-offensive" blobs and then paste them to the "offensive"
blob.

it's a bit harder in Melodyne when the vocal is buried in the middle of a stereo mix!! It tends to pull all sorts of other stuff out with it as well.... but it's fun trying!

Ahh - my bad. I didn't catch in the first post that it was a stereo mix.

Ok, well, theorietically you could still do it with Melodyne in polyphonic mode - you'd just have to identify which blobs were the vocals.

But here's what I'd do - I'd tell the client I can't do it, and that the
music track would have to be re-created and then a new vocal cut. Seriously.

There's times when I just revert to my "I don't need the money that bad" mantra, this would be one of them.

But that's just me..
