And the Thunderbolt trend continues as UA announces their Apollo Thunderbolt interface today.

As I said elsewhere, there will be others very soon, and probably most will be announced BEFORE the upcoming AES Show in SF at end of October.

Has anyone actually used one yet? No?

Not trying to be negative here. There is a lot of vapourware happening with Thunderbolt from what I *hear* to be apple pinching the hose on TB chip supply.

Actual real world use would be very interesting. Way to much static and marketing crap right now.

On a positive note. I see a lot of video people adopting the Black magic stuff and saw a Digico USB Madi thingo the other day.

Apple isn't the issue. Intel has been promising those TB chip sets for peripherals for a long time now - last Spring as a matter of fact.

The AVID Apollo has a $6K or $7K price tag depending on the version. There are some interesting reviews - positive and negative - about the "almost zero latency" these promise.

Well, zero latency in the digital world is an impossibility unless you go around the problem a la CueMix. Is "almost" good enough? The market will decide, no doubt. I'm not concerned.

This is an exciting time for audio interfaces.

Many Thunderbolt interfaces on the way, and Sonnet's Thunderbolt adaptor for PCIe has been given the green light by RME as compatible with their USB and FW.

Meanwhile, at least three audio interfaces have been announced and/or released now that include standalone multi-channel recording modes to USB Flash Drive.

And Mike is right about the production bottleneck and Apple's vs. Intel's role. But it seems that we are now past that (though hiccups can still happen, and the entire industry has been affected by the after effects of last year's tsunami/disaster in Japan and storm damage in Thailand).
