Loud volume when tracking, low volume when played back

Getting back into recording with DP and noticed with 7.24 that the volume levels when recording a track are much louder than when I play the track back. Am I missing some setting that adjusts playback volume? From the waveform of the tracks it looks like there is plenty of signal - but I can barely hear it on playback.

You probably need to give more information - are you recording through a plug in V-rack or is it something to do with your recording setup? No-one can tell what you are doing unless you say what you are recording, and how.

Are you monitoring your inputs on Cuemix as well as DP?

Might be. I'll double check this. I'm guessing the Cuemix signal is making the monitoring seem louder?

I'm using a basic setup - 2408mkII into a MacPro

I notice the difference too but have found it the other way around. I use RME IO's and the through tone is lower than through DP. I do set my outputs for mixing at -10 so it could be that. I run into level differences often though and it just distracts me. Nothing that would make the session bad though. I wish there was a standard for all DAWs so that '0' level or unity was an exact science. Some do '0' as -4 from standard which is 0 and some do +4. The industry standard used to be .775 volts AC. I guess another standard lost was +4 for everything on desks with +28db or more headroom. Headroom disappeared real quick with digital and your lucky to get +18 output headroom now even when the dynamic range is 120db. Back then, in Analog, the current followers which used to be built into all amp designs were generally class A like the API 2520. This made heat like crazy so IO makers avoided them like the plague and still do. Todays version of current followers to get headroom are putting two Chips back to back one for the + side of the AC waveform and one for the -. That gets us +22 without followers and solved the heat issue but made the circuit a bit strange sonically. MOTU uses this design on their outputs with JVC chipsets.

Still levels are different in DAWs for a whole set of different reasons. I think the posters question answered that he could have been listening to the IO levels as well as through effects is interesting but would he not have heard the delay diffs?

Using the input monitor button in DP instead of using Cuemix FX...

If the faders are at unity, the input monitor and playback levels are the same,
only if the faders are lower than zero, input monitoring and playback differ
( playback at -20 fader setting will play back sound at -10 ) etc, factor of 2 in dB

As I said and agree, there is no unity level standards. I use RME and it's different then MOTU IOs. I's like random standards that has always been a problem since the "Digital" revolution.

There *IS* a standart level in DP,
faders at unity ( zero ) will monitor the input, and playback the track *at the same internal standart level*
Only lowering faders will show the difference in levels...
You can use a voltmeter and measure and you will see what I mean...
Maybe we misunderstand ?
Different DAWs , ok I fully agree different absolute level behaviour, but
inside a DAW, -20 dB should be - 20 dB...
and that's what isn't so when input monitoring in DP with a MK3 Motu...
It's a bug IMPOV and maybe it's taking Motu so long to fix it...
....DP8.... ?
