What do members think of the long term risk of freeware no longer being supported suddenly and thereafter ruining one’s masters when these plugs break?
I know freezing can be a solution, but on plugs that one straps across a mix or aux bus, freeze is not an option. I know these gtrs don’t fall into that category, but other plugs like compressors and EQs , delays etc, do. Thoughts?

No, not just free plugs. But companies that make no money tend to go out of biz faster so the risk is higher.

UPDATE: Well well... I got excited too soon. Free version is limited to 4 octave range. 49 keys. Good to demo it, but not the great "score" I'd hoped for! Hey... no free lunch, right?

I'm not on Facebook (by choice) but I find it funny you need to like something before they'll give it you. I did have a girlfriend like that though, now that I think of it.
Seriously though, I do know quite few people that are not on Facebook for various personal reasons, so these kinds of Facebook-centric business maneuvers may benefit from jumping on the bandwagon, they are also ostracizing other potential customers. Just sayin'.

I'm one of them, don't have Facebook and don't want to. Besides audio plug-ins I've seen this with graphics tools as well or to get software coupons. Turns me away fast and I look for alternatives from other companies. Same goes for those that want you to sign up using your facebook account or tweet something.
As far as free VIs, I've used some from 0on3 that run in kontakt player http://0on3.wordpress.com. I haven't installed them on my new system with DP8 so not sure how they work.

It's business I guess. They get a load of web services in return for your information.
I had a FB account early on and got rid of it. But it's getting to the point where I think I might be shooting myself in the foot. Resistance is futile?

Your account is probably still there, unless they changed policies the last few years,I don't think you can close an account but you can deactivate it which is the state I have my FB account most of the time .
I use it primarily for these types of promotions.
I might go on Facebook about 10 minutes every 2 or 3 months, more often than not my account is deactivated.
I don't like or "get" Facebook but there's too many sales promotions tied into it for the bargain hunter I am not to have an account.
I keep my privacy settings on and it takes about 1 minute to deactivate the account when I inevitably get disgusted with it until the next sale or giveaway that I need the dormant account for.

It's gone. There was a change to allow you to delete an account. It just goes inactive for a few months and if it is never used, it is erased and is unrecoverable. I inadvertently clicked on it once so it took a long time for it to go away.

Facebook collects your data in order to sell it to marketing firms. It's great if you're trying to build a fanbase. But if you're not, then caveat emptor as they say. If you want to minimize your personal data that is being sold off to marketing firms, yet still use Facebook for bargains, there are several methods you can utilize.
Keep in mind that what Facebook can track your activity across the web even when you are logged out of FB. If that is of concern to you, there are some things you can do to take advantage of these promos and still avoid Facebook tracking you. Here are some examples that folks use:
1. Consider creating a pseudonym account and just follow the businesses you like, i.e. don't add all your friends, use a secondary email address. Technically Facebook insists that you use your real name, however there is a large growing population of FB users who are using pseudonyms.
2. Delete tracking cookies (which is a good idea regardless of Facebook concerns) https://discussions.apple.com/message/13232362#13232362
3. Do the recommendations in this article http://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-st ... g-you.html
4. If you want to go even further, you can use your hosts file on OSX to block websites http://www.addictivetips.com/mac-os/mod ... os-x-lion/
Lastly, remember that with many of the "free services" on the web, the product these businesses build in order to monetize their business are your personal preferences and information. So it is up to you to personally decide what you feel comfortable with in terms of tracking.
