move a soundbyte vertically but not horizontally?

Post by KarlSutton »

Is there a key to hold to keep a soundbyte (clip) in it's place in time when you drag it to another track? My workaround for years has been to enable the grid & set it on whole notes, but I'm sure there is an easier way. Yes I do have the +1000 page manual - just hoping someone here could tell me - thanks!

Hold down the Shift key as you drag the soundbite to a lower or higher track.

that's what my mac intuition tried first but it never works - in the sequence window that is. Is this only something that works in the track window?

I've noticed the Shift Key not working to constrain soundbites vertically. At least in the Sequence Window. I do what you do -- the grid. You can activate the grid with the Command Key, so you don't have to click it every time. Hold down the Command Key, and the grid will toggle on or off (depending on how it's already set) until you release the key.

It's not the shift key.

It's the command key. It works as a momentary switch for the grid.

In the Sequence Editor, you highlight the soundbite and start dragging it up or down until you see a black border around the soundbite, then you hit the Shift key. You can move the soundbite horizontally within its own track but not in the track you're moving it to, there it snaps to the original position when the Shift key was pressed.

It's kind of odd how it works, but it does work.

See? I learn something here every day. I did not know it worked that way.

In SE, Shift key does the job here.
I use it all the time.

Just two conditions :
- no selection (to make sure, deselect all thru Cmd+D)
- Shift button must be pressed, and hold, before click and drag.
