Creating an 8 hour file. Is there a time limit on AIFFs?

Post by dix »

I'm trying to render an 8 hour long file for an installation. Even though I have DP set to create 16bit AIFFs in the prefs merging the files needed created a WAVE64 file for some reason (i've tried WAVE and SD2 files w the same results). The file plays back fine in DP, but is not recognized by my Mac as playable. I've noticed merging anything over 6h20mins creates a WAVE64 file. If it's less than that DP creates files as expected. Converting the WAVE64 to AIFF creates a file with playback errors that show up a few hours in. Are there time limits within DP and/or the Mac OS that are preventing this? How can I create a file like this?

Thanks!

Not sure about time, but there is a file size limit for aif files, either 2 GB or 4 GB, depending on the resource. WAVE64 files don't have that limitation.

Does your file have to be interleaved? It probably is the 2GB limit kicking in - I had difficulty rendering some long surround files until I set DP to de-interleaved.

But they're not supported on standard Macs :(. …poking around I now see that there's a 4gb file size limit on wav and aif files, which is exactly the limit I'm hitting. I guess I will need to figure out a -4gb solution. What plays WAVE64 files? Google is not clear so far. Can all standard DAWs handle them?

Good question. I'm looking into it.

If you use iTunes, sections can be set to play seamlessly, as in an album, and it can be set to loop.

Good idea. I'll just make two files and create a playlist that plays through the break. Thanks!

Actually, if one is clever with editing the start and the finish the playlist can be set to repeat seamlessly too, meaning that there never needs to be a break at all.

I can imagine simply using an iPod for such purposes!

Cheers

Problem there is that there is an overlap. The first time through the intro is clean. The 2nd time through and all subsequent times through the intro has the tail of the outgoing loop overlapping it. …the two big file solution seems perfect actually. thx!

Excellent. It's always fun to brainstorm topics like this... I'm always looking for solutions for such things, especially when it comes to unconventional situations such as sound and visual art/installation work.... and cost-effective ways to achieve them!!!

Cheers!!

Since 4G is a hard limit, mp3 at 320/AAC or mp4 would be the way I would chose. Playback in iTunes.
