I just bought my new do all porta-studio

Post by Todzilla »

Thanks to new model introductions, I just bought:

15.4" MacBook Pro from late 2011 w 2.2 GHz quad core i7 - $1499 new (no refurb)
3 year Apple Care for $122
256Gb Crucial M4 SSD for $179
free shipping, no sales tax (for my state) from BHphotovideo.com

I've ordered 16G RAM ($95 newegg) and a 620G HD to put in place of the optical drive.

Heavy Apps will be Digital Performer, Komplete and Mainstage.

Super psyched to be getting this new rig for such good $$. 16G RAM, SSD for OSX, Apps and maybe Komplete files, a second drive for DP projects and I CAN CARRY MY WHOLE DAW AROUND WITH ME. Should be blazing fast and able to leap tall buildings with a single bound and RAM to spare.

How you transfer your legacy files will determine if they open properly once you upgrade to DP 7. I would recommend Time Machine but I see you are still on OS 10.4.

It's a permissions issue and easy to fix.

Yes, DP 7 (if not 8 ) is the gluttonous finale to this spending binge.

Mr. Halloran, thanks for the heads up on file xfers. I thought I'd just load my latest backup and see if files are openable. Since Time Machine isn't on my old war horse, I don't think that route is available.

When you transfer them to the new 'puter, they may not open. If so, do a Get Info on each project folder, unlock, allow Read & Write, then check Apply to Enclosed Items.

Interestingly, 7.24 is really tight on this in ways that 5, 6 and 7.01 were not - those versions opened my old files just fine. We spent 3 weeks in Tech Support before I discovered the above - they didn't know that 7.12 and 7.24 changed in that regards. Had 7.12 not opened a window that kept flashing "access denied" on my sound files, I never would have figured it out, either (hmmmm.... Access Denied... I wonder...).

Some of my old files had been created in v.2.6 on a Beige G3 while others began life on my G5. I was very glad to figure this out now. I would think that, since 7.24 wouldn't open them but gave no error message, 8 would have given me the same grief and I might never have found the solution. Why only 7.12 flashed the error, I'll never know.

Mike,

Thanks much! I can see that driving me crazy in my zeal to crank up the new toy. I assume I could just go to the folder that holds all my projects and do the same, rather than have to set perms for each project folder?

I don'y know. I did it on a project basis. Some gave me no grief and those I left alone.

My porta-studio is better than yours!

Tascam has now created a Portastudio for iPad...

It's just like one of the ones I owned (and still have in storage somewhere). The flat round knobs were made of feel-good rubber. I always enjoyed touching them. That will be hard to replicate for iPad.

Yeah, my porta-studio will be related to those old cassette based Tascams, much like a Protozoa is related to a blue whale!

Still, those old units, in the right hands could do amazing things!

My best selling album was made on one of those things - just to prove that I could do it. One of this year's projects is to release it onto CD.
