MOTU 828 has clock sync or driver issue

Hi, all—
I'm using an old MOTU 828 firewire with Digital Performer 4.6.1 on Mac OS 10.4.11 (G5).
I've been having problems with the 828 cutting off audio, and the clock and analog activity lights flashing alternately. The only sound is an electric clicking sound. This began happening every once and a while, interrupting recording, but now is constant and I can't get DP to open up anymore (DP says the audio hardware isn't responding and offers selections or "Hardware Setup" and "Studio Setup" ).
Any idea what might be causing this and what I can do to fix it? I know I'm working with old software/hardware, but it's what I can afford at present.
Thanks,
Nor
