Kernel Panic on 2008 non unibody MBP
Hey all,
man I'm bummed. I just spent $310 to have the motherboard on my 2008 MBP replaced, only to now be dealing with kernel panics on start up.
I've booted from the install disk, repaired disk, repaired permission, re-installed the ram, ran Disk Warrior in target disk mode from my freakin G5 (that still works, amazingly), reset the PRAM, with no luck.
It will boot from the install CD and from an external drive however.
Just looking for any input as to why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it.
Thanks guy and gals

$310 sounds like too little for such a job. I would be talking to whomever did the work.
A kernal panic can be caused by hardware or software. Something ain't right.
These are notorious for having troubles if restored from anything but the correct restore disk - you can usually upgrade from there. Problems with the internal Superdrive are also well known.
You can install software that will not run through Target Disk mode if it was your MBP that was in TG and not the computer that you were using as a drive source. I was able to install Lion onto a MBP with a core duo chip - of course it wouldn't run as Lion requires a Core 2 Duo.
You probably need to restore from the disk that came with the computer. Run all the upgrades. If you are getting kernal panics before you have installed any programs, take it to someone who knows what he/she is doing.
If you have been using non commercial obsolete or hacked software, do not reinstall it.
The last time I had kernal panic issues was on a similar MBPro. Doing the above made them go away.

Well, if it's happening on boot (during boot?) you can rule out software. Kernel panics are generally resultant of hardware issues. Difficult to track down though sometimes, but typically the last added hardware is where you start looking. In your case, the logic board. Have you let the repair shop know yet? Do they use Apple genuine parts? Refurb or new parts? Put the ball in their court and have them fix the problem. Maybe they can swap another logic board in to test with?

That is just mis-information. Surely, hardware can be one cause, but in most experiences I've seen and heard of, it is software.bad andy wrote:Kernel panics are generally resultant of hardware issues.
Don't believe everything you think.

A clean install of the OS and all programs, etc., would likely fix it.

I based my statement on my own experience. YMMV.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:That is just mis-information. Surely, hardware can be one cause, but in most experiences I've seen and heard of, it is software.bad andy wrote:Kernel panics are generally resultant of hardware issues.

The original poster said his panics occur during boot, and with a recent logic board replacement performed for a questionable amount of money (a good deal if done legitimately for sure, but suspect to me) I would look at hardware first, starting with the components used for the recent repair. Letting the shop know the current behavior is where I suggest beginning. It does sound like the repair shop jacked up the user account, probably during a restore of some kind. The appended "1" on the short name sounds to me like they restored an account to a drive with an account already using that short name, hence the "1" I would want to know more about their processes.
Hey OP, I just noticed you are in Brooklyn. Did you get that repaired at TekServe?

Re: Kernel Panic on 2008 non unibody MBP
I'm totally onboard (pun intended) that it is likely the hardware in this case, but in my world it has always been the software.
$300 for a motherboard installed? That's like cost unless the board was salvaged from another machine - in which case who knows what problems lurk.
So back on topic- I'd bring it back to the guy who fixed it. Then again there comes a time in all our lives when it's simply time for another machine. Actually, I LOVE those times!!

There's always the PanicReporter log. Reading those entrails might give you a clue.

Re: Kernel Panic on 2008 non unibody MBP
Hey! Sorry for the late response. Work too much (not doing music)
I took my MBP to an apple store in Delaware. So who knows about where the parts came from.
I may have fixed it. I ended up just restoring from my back up drive. So far so good. I didn't reformat either. Should I not have done this? Everything seems to be working pretty good. And my boot time is faster. Actually, the whole computer seems faster.
Thanks for the responses!!!
