Can I put markers inside an audio track?

I've been a MOTU user since Performer on the SE30 although I would never have considered myself to be expert.

Recently though, I've been trying to use some of the more advanced audio features in DP 7.4 for a big project with which I'm associated. At a recording studio yesterday I was watching the engineer using ProTools and one of the things he did was to insert markers directly into an audio track. This is something I've often done with Final Cut, it's very useful to be able to mark specific locations in an actual track and when you move the track, those markers move as well.

When I got home, armed with some of the AIF files, I wanted to do the same thing with DP but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to do this. I could only get markers to show up at the top of the sequence window itself, not inside individual audio tracks.

The manual doesn't mention any procedure for this....is this something that's missing from DP?

No, I don't believe you can create markers that are attatched to tracks. HOWEVER, I'm almost postive you can create markers on soundbites. Depending upon what you're doing, this might give you about the same thing. If I remember correctly, you can create soundbite markers inside the waveform editor, and I seem to also remember that you can create them from within the sequence editor by right-clicking on the clip. I might be totally full of it though.

In fact, this is how Final Cut and Premiere Pro work as well, markers can be attatched to clips or sequences, but not tracks. I believe markers are stored on their own data element, like the conductor track, so it would be like asking to put a tempo change in an audio track, or a MIDI event in an aux track. That's the way DP does markers, it may have its shortcomings though.

Let me know what you find, I'm not in front of DP now (currently working in Premiere).

Well, I don't know about Premiere but in FinalCut Express, regions in both video and audio tracks on the timeline can definitely contain markers.

I just reread my original question and where I said "markers in audio tracks", I actually meant markers inside individual audio regions in a track. Normally I just have one region for the entire length of the track so I tend to use the terms interchangably.

I know you can put them in soundbites but I don't think that helps. In particular, in the cases where I want markers inserted in regions, it's because I want to be able to realign the position of regions in a track relative to regions in other tracks above or below.

I guess you can't --- so maybe I should ask the question from a different perspective.

Here's what I'm trying to do.

I have three tracks each of which contains a single region with audio in it. I need to independently move two of the regions by some amount so that the audio lines up in a particular way.

I can easily identify the location in each audio track when I'm in it, e.g, using the scrub tool to find the place I want. But once I jump out of that track to find desired location in one of the other tracks, there's no longer any indication of what I selected in the first track. So when I'm trying to slide the region in another track, I don't know the exact place anymore to position over.

I'm told that this is trivial to do with Pro Tools and I find it hard to believe that it can't be done eaily with DP.

Not markers in the traditional sense, but you can do this by setting sync points. Instructions on sync points is covered on p 348-349 in the DP7 manual. Pretty easy, very similar to Pro Tools.
