UPDATE! After muddling through for a while, I finally brought my machine in to Happy Mac in Austin, where they ran a bunch of software diagnostics to check for software corruption and so on. DAW systems are not something they usually treat but they were positive and game about the whole thing, and charged me very little for what they were able to do. They suggested, however, that I check for new Avid drivers for my 002 rack. Which reminded me that I hadn't checked on those in some time, giving up in frustration about this time last year on there ever being an update and forgetting to keep up with it after that.

So, the upshot: new drivers googled, downloaded and installed, and - behold. Things work again like they're supposed to.

OMG. This is making me SO happy.
