Ultralite MK3 Hybrid - Another no sound - BSOD question

Post by RapidAdjustment »

Hi all,

Yesterday I installed this Ultralite on Windows 7 x64. I previously used a M-Audio Fasttrack Ultra but because of some issues I ordered the Ultralite.
I'm not bothering you with the details.

I need you to know that I really read through a lot of topics but it seems that I can't find an answer to the issue I'm having.

It's like this... I'm trying to play sound from within WinAmp, Komplete 8, Sound Forge and/or Live 8. I cannot see meter activity within CueMix FX, I understand that is related to the fact that sound is coming from my computer. When I check the meters in Windows (Playback Devices), for instance MOTU Phones 1-2, I see a lot of activity. But no sound is coming through to my Phones that of course is connected to the Ultralite.

Lets narrow the scope down to Winamp. In Winamp, through Directsound output or Wave Output, I set MOTU Phones 1-2 as my device. I do the same with the Default Playback Device in Windows. I also set 44.1Khz as supported format.
In MOTU Audio Console I've set the following:

Phones Assign: Phones
Main Out Assign: Main Out 1-2
Return Assign: Phones

On BUS 1 the Phones 1-2 is selected.

Apparently there are different ways to route the audio to the Phones using the settings in Audio Console and CueFX. So I also tried the following:

Windows Playback Device: Main Out 1-2
BUS 1: Main 1-2
Audio Console: Everything on Main Out 1-2 (But experimented with the Phones setting, I tried all 3x3x3 options)

Another topic stated that wiring the S/PDIF ports on the back and make another Bus etc. could help, for me this isn't working because I don't have any sound.

Possibly I'm overlooking a simple but important step. Unfortunately I cannot see which step that is. In de meantime I'm going to use my Fasttrack Ultra but I really want to use the MOTU as you can understand.

Another issue I'm having are unexpected BSODs. This happened twice today while I was reading the UltraLite manual. Apparently this isn't normal behavior but I read that MOTU has dealt with this issue. If they dealt with it, why do I get the BSODs?

I really hope someone can help me with the issues. Please let me know if you need more info.

Regards,

RapidAdjustment

Hey,

To be perfectly honest, I didn't read a word yet of what you wrote beside my eyes seeing bsod. First thing is first and that's to get rid of them asap.

C:\Windows\Minidump

Copy the files in there to any other folder then zip them (right click, send to compressed folder = zip). Upload the zip to http://www.Rapidshare.com or similar.

Once that is out of the way, then attention can turn to lesser matters.

The issue on your system is the Intel storage driver, iaStorA.sys:

Code: Select all

0: kd> lmvm iaStorA
start end module name
fffff880`01280000 fffff880`04284000 iaStorA T (no symbols)
    Loaded symbol image file: iaStorA.sys
    Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\iaStorA.sys
    Image name: iaStorA.sys
    Timestamp: Wed Oct 12 16:29:51 2011 (4E95F8BF)
    CheckSum: 000957F4

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
So you should head on over to Intel.com to download and install the latest version. It's called Rapid Storage for some models since they changed naming scheme. Either way, update the storage for your motherboard.

It's a good idea to also update the motherboard bios to latest from the manufacturer.

Let me know how it goes...

It is possible but doubtful that Truecrypt is playing a part. If issues persist, uninstall that as a test.

When done updating, it would be good to run this command from an elevated command prompt:

chkdsk /r X:

for each partition on the system, changing X to match them with each run.

I've completed the following tasks ;)

BIOS updated
Intel Storage and LAN drivers updated
TrueCrypt uninstalled
Checkdisk has completed its checks without any issues

Hopefully this will help keeping the system stable.
I will power on the MOTU and let the PC run till 9am local time.

Tomorrow I will report back to you about the (not) BSOD, if all's positive we can move on to the less important but good for sound troubleshooting.

I really want to thank you for the effort and time you're spending on this issue!

A little side question, any idea what 44 means just under Meter? Has this something to do with the amount of KHz? I cannot imagine that I'm on page 44 and that my Channel is Meter ;)

Thanks again!

I would uninstall the M-Audio software/driver if you're not going to be using it with this system any longer.

The phones have their own volume adjustment setting. Also, in MOTU Audio console, they can be set to any output or to itself. Have a look and you'll see what I mean.

In addition, you can use the loopback method to see Windows' sound in the MOTU. To do so, set Windows to have S/PDIF as the default playback device. You can also set individual apps the same way too, or if they are set to default, it will automatically be. You then use a single cable connected to both the S/PDIF input and output on the MOTU.

In CueMixFX bus mix 1, mute S/PDIF inputs and set output to S/PDIF. On bus mix 2, set the input level of S/PDIF to suit your taste and set the output to Analog 1-2 (or wherever your main audio is routed to.)

If you set output to 1-2, then just set the headphones assigned to that too.

You're welcome.

ok, BSOD issue isn't over yet.
This morning the minidump folder had a lot of dumps present.

http://www.rapidadjustment.com/downloads/dump2.zip

I'm getting the feeling that this issues arises when my screens go blank (after 20 minutes). System is not going into sleep mode and I'm pretty sure I also set the harddisks to "Never" sleep.

Maybe that USB devices are put into sleep mode by Windows/UEFI and because of this a BSOD is generated. Not sure, need to check my UEFI and Windows settings.

I find it rather strange that the above only occurs when the MOTU device is connected and that the Minidump is pointing towards my Intel Storage driver. Just my 2 cents.

So if I set my Phones to Main 1-2 and select Main 1-2 as output device within Winamp, there's sound? I've set this already, I also put the slider to max within CueFX and on the MOTU itself I put the volume up to 0DB. This is the most I can get using the volume knob. Still no sound.

You posted this some time ago, I tried this but also no sound.
There's something ridiculous simple I'm overseeing. I find it strange that 0DB is the maximum I can get. To hear sound I need more than 0DB or am I wrong?

Alright, your Intel storage driver is still crashing the system in all crashes. I see you updated it and that's good. What we need to look at is all other file system type of software now, since the actual Intel driver itself is not to blame.

Code: Select all

0: kd> lmvm iastora
start end module name
fffff880`01096000 fffff880`0409b000 iaStorA T (no symbols)

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
I see you have Daemon Tools Lite installed. That is completely notorious for causing bsods, so I would uninstall that.

Code: Select all

0: kd> lmvm dtsoftbus01
start end module name
fffff880`1525e000 fffff880`152a7000 dtsoftbus01 (deferred)
    Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\dtsoftbus01.sys
    Image name: dtsoftbus01.sys
    Timestamp: Fri Jan 13 08:45:46 2012 (4F10358A)
    CheckSum: 00046D1E

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
I also see you have BitDefender antivirus. I would completely uninstall that, reboot and then replace it with MSE. (MSE is the only antivirus that can not and does not cause crashes. ALL others can and do.)

TrueCrypt is still installed:

Code: Select all

fffff880`043a5000 fffff880`043e6000 truecrypt.sy
    Timestamp: unavailable (00000000)
    Checksum: 00000000
    ImageSize: 00041000
------

Take care of those things and if necessary, post new crash dump.

If all is well, then we'll move on.

Back again, and uninstalled only BitDefender. Truecrypt is really uninstalled. Strange thing for sure is that the Truecrypt.sys is still in my system32\drivers folder. Nice piece of software :(

I also changed some powersaving setting.
Changed USB selective suspend setting to Disabled
Also the Turn off hard disk setting was active, changed this to 0 hence never.

Now only my screens are turned off, everything else will operate in 6th gear. Sorry Mr. Gore!

Another thing I connected is a Digital Coax cable to my Logitech 5500, at this moment I'm waiting for the Genelecs I ordered. When I route the audio to S/PDIF within Winamp I still get no audio over these speakers. I made a s*** load of screenshots for you any other troubleshooters to check:

http://www.rapidadjustment.com/downloads/screens.zip

Edit: Screens were made while playing audio

This MOTU Device is really bustin' my balls aaahhhhhh :smash:

Another thing I didn't check was wether the device is defective or not.
The inputs are not, that for sure. I plugged in my guitar and sound was flowing out of the phones, great.

I've also wired the S/PDIF in/output again. Bus 1 is S/PDIF / Bus 2 is Analog 1-2. Now when I route Guitar Rig / Absynth / Winamp / name it to S/PDIF there's still a no go.

Furthermore, I'm evaluating Reaper (R-e-a-p-e-r) atm, within Reaper I also set S/PDIF as my output devices but as expected, no sound.

So,

connected instrument to the MOTU = ok
Sound from PC = not ok.

And why is the option "Mix 1 Return includes Computer Output" greyed out?
Is this the reason why things are going that well regarding the PC audio output?

So I just stopped fiddling around with setting different audio devices and I saw the following behaviour.

When I select a different audio device (realtek) Absynth is giving me CPU activity. This is not happening when the MOTU is selected.

This also counts for Maschine. When I select WASAPI (Shared Mode) and put my MB audio device (Realtek) as active device I can play my songs.
When I select ASIO / MOTU etc. I cannot get the song to be played
Selecting the M-Audio USB device also gives me sound.

I really don't understand what's going on here but this partially explains why sound is not routed/played to/by the MOTU. The only thing that is routed are lots of internal system sounds like HD activity etc. which I can hear over the headphones. I hope that this won't be a big issue when I connect the Genelec monitors.

Another thing I would like to mention is that I have no possibility to test the device using FireWire, Asus has skipped this feature on their S2011 boards.

Been a long time, got some good and some baddish news.
I no longer have the BSOD's, yay...

Because I thought that my UltraLite was defective (and I needed more inputs) I replaced the unit for a 896MK3 Hybrid. Now I've got more than enough inputs but still, how surprising, no sound.

@torrentg
I followed your guide and screens but without any luck.
Besides the No Sound issue, I'm also getting the following strange behaviour. Let me explain the situation.

In NI Maschine, I select the following:

Audio
Driver: Asio
Device: MOTU Audio ASIO
Sample Rate: 48000

Routing --> Outputs
Maschine Out 1 L: 11 AES/EBU 1-2
Maschine Out 2 R: 12 AES/EBU 1-2
(Why AES/EBU? My Genelecs are connected to the AES/EBU out)

When I try to start a song, the damn thing won't play. I mean, when I hit the play button there's no activity. When I switch back to the WASAPI driver the MOTU and Genelecs go into massive flippyboing mode and after a fight over the sample rate they fortunately become friends again. But, even, still, when I press the play button, there's no activity.

Could someone please explain this to me, I'm just a simple network engineer that became a manager who knows that things related to electronics have some sort of logical explanation. I really need your help finding this for me.

Just to let you know, I've started a Techlink thingy (4/21/2012) at MOTU but they've only taken adequate actions regarding the "put the UltraLite registration into the crapper" request that I dropped there on 05/02/2012
. (Thanks again Nicole for removing the registration)

Here's my :deadhorse: proof regarding the No Sound techlink.
72025 UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid
No sound from Windows
Unread
04/21/2012
17:52:41

I also would like to know why it's needed to loop the SPDIF in/out to get sound from Windows. My M-Audio device has a couple of outputs. I only needed to move the slider in a upright position and, tataaaa, On the first day I created sound... Why does it seem to be so hard operating a MOTU.

Thanks guys for even reading this, of course more thanks will go out to the one that solves my solvable mystery related to this Mystery Machine, a Scooby snack anyone?

Glad to hear of success with no more bsods.

For your audio problems, let's try to keep it as simple as can be for the moment.

Download/install Winamp, then run it. Options | Preferences | Plug-ins | Output. Set it to Analogue 1-2 (or Main out 1-2) - whichever you have.

Plug some gear into the 1-2 output on the Motu like an amp/speakers. If you don't have anything like that, use the Motu Audio Console to set the Phones Assignment to Analogue or Main Out (same as before in Winamp.)

Play something in Winamp. How is this behaving? Working well?

Hi torrentg,

Great to hear from you again.

Yesterday I did the following.

In WinAmp I selected AES/EBU 1-2 as output.
I connected my guitar to the Analog 1 input.
Bus 1 has AES/EBU selected.
From within CueFX in the Phones menu I slected AES/EBU.

The situation now is that I can hear my guitar over the Phones and Genelecs. When I start a mp3/flac in Winamp the sound is not hearable over the Phone and/or Genelecs.

I also setup Winamp to route the sound over Analog 1-2 / 3-4 / SPDIF (Loop) etc. Still no sound.

If you like to see the configuration for yourself, it's no problem for me to use Teamviewer.

Here are my settings withing Audio console

Parallel to our troubleshooting I also put in some requests at NI, Live, Reaper and MOTU again.
