Interface preamps

Post by jimmy77611 »

Do all of the latest interfaces have the same quality of preamps and converters? I'm considering a 4pre or ultralite, but if the 828mk3 hybrid is better quality pres/convertors, I'll spring for that.

MOTU seems to keep things relatively uniform across their product line regardless of price. The MK3 products, for instance, use the same preamp circuit as the 8-Pre. I expect that we would find the same between the MK3 and newer devices.

If you have to be absolutely certain, shoot them an e-mail. Magic Dave was able to get me technical answers (a rarity in the industry).

That said, the MOTU preamp circuit is a get-what-you-pay-for situation. They're decent and neutral but not great preamps. Completely comparable to most other devices in their price range but should not be the determining factor in your purchase consideration. Select your device based on functionality and convenience; then, if you need better preamps, buy truly superior ones and hook them up to the line inputs.
