Whoa! Crazy stuff happening after major problem.
Don't know exactly what I did, but my time capsule said I didn't have permission to see it, so...
I did something to the read/write stuff which changed everything on the machine.
Brought it to the Apple store and it took 1 1/2 to repair permissions.
Now I'm getting all kinds of messages about the extensions not being installed correctly. I already got the iLock ones back and the MOTU MIDI ones but there are about 20 others that keep popping up. A lot of them seem to have something to do with the printers.
I'll attach a screen shot if I can find out how to do that. Don't see any buttons for that right now.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Yeah. Get a clean HD and install everything from scratch. Not from a migration assistant as that will copy all those bad, nasty permissions, but a clean install of the OS and your apps from the original disks and DMG files.NealF wrote: Any ideas?
Seriously. Been there...
You can copy folders with documents but that's about it. All else should be clean from the source. Sucks, I know. But that is really your only realistic option.
You might want to pick up this thread starting here:

I'll cross pollinate the two.

Yikes!
Does that mean getting all those licenses for the plugins again?
Or can I just take those folders (the Library, I think?) and drag them over?
Thanks.

Not if their permissions are messed up. You really gotta be careful about that.

I think as long as I have to do a complete reinstall I might as well upgrade to Lion. I've checked out a few of my plugins and so far it looks like they all have updates for Lion.
Is there any discussion on this board about things to watch out for?

Re: Whoa! Crazy stuff happening after major problem.
Well, some installers still are not Lion compatible, so watch for that. Also, Quicken is not and some apps may need updating (if an update is available yet).

Thanks. I think I'll wait and just do the SL reinstall.

good move NealF, many users are happily parked in SL.

Re: Whoa! Crazy stuff happening after major problem.
It does if you use Apple's Address Book, Calendar and Mail programs. If not for those, I'd likely still be running SL, too.

Depends on if you consider those advantages. I hate the look of the address book, mail, and contacts in Lion. But that's probably just me. I don't want to get too deep into a tail wagging discussion about it (again) but Lion does make my Mac Pro look like a mobile device - which it ain't and I don't want it to be one.
Just sayin...

Re: Whoa! Crazy stuff happening after major problem.
Lion doesn't make my Mac look like a mobile device, because I just don't use Launch Pad or Mission Cntrol... I use the dock and the folder structure just like I always did. It looks exactly like SL, except all my Apple devices now synch through iCloud, which is a major productivity advantage for me. Perhaps it isn't for you, but hat doesn't mean that Lion should be dismissed.

Re: Whoa! Crazy stuff happening after major problem.
Well, there's that and the fact that they hide the plists - which I know you can change - and a lot of other stuff that you can change as well. I tried it at the Apple store for a little bit and didn't like it. I also have to wait for a couple of apps to update, mostly Quicken. I know I will have to be in Lion eventually anyway and I guess it's like getting older. You don't have to do it, but it beats the alternative.
Thanks for the clarifications, Jim. Maybe I'm just afraid of getting wet...
