Re: TRACK FOLDERS

Post by Robbie_2327 »

Well I just ran into my first ever sync problems and I'm using a very small track count. Oy. I just came here looking for some answers. I was just spotting a scene I was about to write, I placed a marker and then the sync went out after the place I put the marker in. I then switched to a different chunk in the same project (also small track count and no folders) and the audio tracks were out of sync with the MIDI?!?

I just rebooted my system, seemed to work fine but it happened again, now I'm a bit lost. Maybe I should post a new thread

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Robbie

I'd post a new thread. I never use multiple chunks in scores. I do one big linear thing. I have had trouble with multiple chunks. And i have had this issue before, recently, but when I got rid of folders it went away.

Of course my experiences are only on my rig only and won't be the same for anyone else. Also, the problems I experience are generally the result of my own personal ineptitude, and should't be taken as criticism of motu products or their quality or their ability to function well.

Interesting, I do scoring as well and typically have 250 tracks in a session. I use the folders but looking at the session I have up now, it's only 11 folders. I have yet to ever have a sync problem, but I'm also one of the die hards using DP with DAE. Not sure if using DAE for the audio load takes enough off of the CPU to give DP some breathing room. I'm running an 2008 8 core harpertown with 22 gigs of ram and 10.5.8 and another boot with 10.6, VEP off of 3 slaves, Play standalone etc. DP7.24 / PT8.04

I would be interested in knowing how many folders were you using?

Sounds like a solid rig. I had about 11 folders as well, all the orchestral groups, and then 5 or 6 others to cover other groups of specialty sounds or sound design things or whatever.

I wonder if DAE has something to do with it.

Huh.

Currently I am experimenting with putting more load on my slave computers rather than having a bunch of VEP instances on my MacPro, just to get things snappier.

Also, this is a weird thing, it seems like it got weird when I had the most of the folders closed.

Did you try loading the session into a fresh session, or is this constant with all your sessions? Sometimes a session starts to get corrupted and strange things start happening.

I generally have about 12 or 13 VEP pro returns. Two instances running on the DAW the rest on slaves, also some additional busing from some of the VEPs.

Another question - what kind of QT video are you running?

I have done the fresh import a lot of times and it does solve a lot of woes. I can't remember how fresh it was last I had the folder issues. Pretty fresh I think.

I dumb my movies down a bit - I make the size about 432 x 243, AAC and about 787 bit rate. I used to stream .dv thru an ADVC converter, but my jobs are mostly 23.976 now and .dv doesn't conform to that spec and the sync difference bugs me. So they are small, efficient .mov's

Willheim, are you saing that the sync between DP's TC readout and the quicktime burn window are getting off? I'm working on a film right now, and my template is 100+ tracks also. I have 11 folders organizing everything, with a couple of folders inside of folders for my strings. I closed all of the folders to test this, and everything still played back fine. The sync didn't change any. My movie plays in DP's video window, running from a seperate hard drive. Never really liked messing with Canopus boxes or external video, so I keep it all in one place.

Sounds like one of those issues that could be a combination of things going on, including the track folders. The biggest problem I ever had with sync was caused by using a template that I started in DP4, inside DP7. I had just been adding to it, and refining it over the years. As soon as I loaded it in to a completely blank DP7 session, and then COPIED the chunk in to my new chunk, it went away. In case you don't know, you LOAD the chunk with your old template, and then drag the loaded chunk in to your tracks overview (left hand side) of an empty new chunk.

No, my movies are fine and they are locked solid.

I have done that import thing, but didn't drag the trax into the new chunk. I will have to try it the way you outline.

Nice.

I use a quite large orch template with folders, DP is rewired to Bidule64. I use chunks, movies (.dv) are outputted fm fw port to Canopus to an add screen. I've also got a PC running Bidule 64, clocked w two 2408mk3 linked w optical I/O and wclock fm Mac --> out to PC --> in. VIs on Mac are on V-Rack.

Working at 25 frames (EBU) either with internal or external clock (Mytek), no timing issue.
