Hello all.
Basically I now have a machine room where I can finally keep my Mac's cooled and isolated.
I tried to extend a USB cable about 22 feet, but after reading, apparently you can't have a USB cable longer than 16ft. DOH!
SO, I found a Gefen USB mini extender (over CAT5). When I read the specs for this device it does say that it only transmits USB 1.1 (as opposed to the faster 2.0)
I have 2 MOTU MIDI Time Piece's (MTP) and a mouse and a keyboard all on a USB hub. (which use to go straight to my computer w/ no problems) and then that hub goes to the CAT5 extender. which the other side goes to my computer in the Machine room.
Does anyone have any issues with using a MTP this way???
I guess worse case I can get a USB 2.0 extender... just tryin to save some mula$$.
Thanks for any help!

It might work or you could also probably use another USB hub in the cable run as an extender.

Re: CAT5 USB extender work w/ MTP?
Right. Unfortunately, the distance from my Mac through the wall is just over 16ft.pencilina wrote:you could also probably use another USB hub in the cable run as an extender.
Mainly my question is, will the MTP AV work over a USB 1.1 connection? (instead of USB 2.0)
Thanks!!

Since the MTP AV existed before USB 2 (I first used mine with a Beige G3), the answer should be yes. All usb devices are supposed to be backwards compatible.
The real question: Is it any better over USB 2? Since MIDI and TimeCode use such little bandwidth, I would think that the answer to that would be, "no" but I could be wrong.

Re: CAT5 USB extender work w/ MTP?
Yes, USB 1 is plenty fast for it. I have a MTP AV and a MTP XT both running on my USB 1.1 CAT5 Extension, never a problem. My machine room is about 50 cable feet away. I have a nice Belkin USB hub on the extended side, so I can have the 2 MTPs, a keyboard/mouse, or any other low-speed device in there. I have 3 low-speed, and 2 high-speed USB extenders in my setup.Marc7777 wrote:Mainly my question is, will the MTP AV work over a USB 1.1 connection? (instead of USB 2.0)
I don't turn the MTPs on much anymore, because nearly everything is direct USB controllers and VI's for me nowadays.
