a newbie's note-on problem
I am just learning DP, starting with v7. when I try to record, I hear a short tone as I release the key on my controller (Yamaha CVP 305 Clavinova). This has not happened before, I guess it's easy enough to fix; can anyone answer the please?

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
Sounds like an aftertouch issue. Does the patch you're playing have a release trigger? For example, some samplers have a timpani roll that rolls with you hold down the key, but when you let go it "concludes" the roll with a single soft hit.
The other thing to look for is an accidental double strike or double release. Keys can get bouncy with fast playing to the point where a note could be re-triggering itself. You can confirm that this is or is not happening by checking your Events List for the track you're working on for double attacks.
Not sure if these are definitive solutions, but they're worth checking. You can also either adjust various settings or MIDI parameters on your keyboard or use DP's Input Filter to filter out unwanted MIDI data.

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
Is the offending controller hooked up via USB direct or with a MIDI box of some sort? Might not matter, but could be a factor as well. What were you using as a DAW before this? Anything??
Re: a newbie's note-on problem
I found an answer, sort of. I need to understand more though if you can shed some light. I noticed that the short tone on RELEASE of the note played was only playing through my computer speakers, and not through the output, my Clavinova CVP305. so I looked at the Audio MIDI setup and there were two blue slider buttons "Channel 1, and Channel 2" that were on max volume, while the M channel was greyed out. When I lowered the volume of those two, the beep went away! But I would like to understand this better, if you can shed light on what they are for. I attached a screenshot and a def. from the help.
I took a screen shot but can't figure out how to post it!!!!

well I found out what the blue slider was for: it turns of my metronome click TOO, not just the "note off"

You must have webspace where you can post the image, then you post that image here but putting the link between img and /img, each in brackets [ ].mkoplin wrote: I took a screen shot but can't figure out how to post it!!!!

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
oh well, that makes sense about the img.
I double checked the event list, nothing.
the best way to describe it I guess, it plays through my speakers.
If I lower the volume (so I won't hear it!!) in the Audio MIDI setup page, I also lose the metronome click.
I am totally stumped. I didn't have this problem with the SAME studio setup on my old, retired PPC G5 last week. I was using same program, same sound module, etc etc.
but I was able to purchase a Mac Pro, with Snow Leopard, and installed DP7 new on that (not migrating it from the PPC G5 to the new Mac Pro)

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
You might check the Commands page in DP and be sure nothing is being triggered by a MIDI action, such as a key stroke. It happens! If the key command that the note off "may be" triggering is unavailable for some reason, you might get an OS warning beep thru your speakers. Are you getting correctly pitched notes or just a computer beep?
Re: a newbie's note-on problem
just a computer beep. i'll check the commands right now

what do you think is the best way to check to see if what you're suggesting is happening - quote "if the key command that the note off "may be" triggering is unavailable?

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
Check your commands for a MIDI event, specifically a note off event.
Re: a newbie's note-on problem
I checked all MIDI Events which were assigned a command, none were note-off. I also searched for note, note-off, off, MIDI, I couldn't even find an "off" listed relating to a note or MIDI word.
ideas?

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
Is your controller capable of sending an ASCII message? You might check a MIDI message monitor or your event list to see if something besides note off messages are being sent. Do you have Quickeys or another program capable of Intercepting a MIDI message? Strange problem dude.

Re: a newbie's note-on problem
Also... does it do this during playback or only on note entry?
