USB or Firewire Interface
I'm looking to get a audio/MIDI interface for my Powerbook. And I was wondering what's better USB or Firewire?
I've been in the music biz for years, but I've always (and still currently) have a PowerMac with PCI interfaces. I never ventured into USB or Firewire.
But now I have a Powerbook and want a interface for it. This isn't to replace my studio (I still do 99% of my work on my G5/2408mk3, etc), but ocasionally I'll need my assistant to also work on the Powerbook, or maybe do small recording outside my studio.
I've been looking at:
Lexicon Omega
Macke Spike
Focusrite Saffire
Any input would be appreciated.

Re: USB or Firewire Interface
I've never used a USB interface, but I've had impeccable performances with firewire interfaces. Given that firewire has faster, wider bandwidth and runs off its own card, I think it's the wiser choice.Originally posted by westla:

Re: USB or Firewire Interface
Only get a USB interface if you enjoy headaches and other associated pains from frustration.
Firewire all the way.

Re: USB or Firewire Interface
I thought USB 2.0 had more bandwidth compared to firewire 400, is this correct?
Re: USB or Firewire Interface
Actually yes, you're right, at least theorically. USB 2 is said to rate at 480 Mbps while Firewire 400 rates at 400 Mbps. But, in real world application, Firewire 400 is still faster.Originally posted by westla:

Check this article:

Re: USB or Firewire Interface
Thanks for the great info Heavypick! I guess it's obvious I should go with a Firewire intrface.
