2408 mk II standalone conversion?

I've heard such mixed opinions on whether this is possible. . .

what if i wanted to use the motu 2408 mk II as a stand-alone analog to adat converter with another interface (that would obviously have an adat input)? The pci 324 card would not be in use. the manual and every internet discussion is vague. it seems you can set the "source" of the "format transfer" as "analog" and it will shoot it out the adat and spdif outputs. not sure how you would clock this, but has anyone tried this? say, using the 2408 mk II on a laptop firewire inteface's adat input? can't test this! thanks in advance!
