My first thought when hearing some of the comparisons on youtube like this one

But it seems that particular phrase appears more than one might expect.

To win a lawsuit Satriani must prove that Coldplay had access (actually heard) his song. This could be hard to prove as you can't throw a rock anywhere in the world without hitting someone who hasn't heard a Joe Satriani record.

Not sure how they can do that - it is snippets - not the complete work - should fall under fair use. I've heard longer "samples" in rap.

Fair use doesn't apply unless the "snippets" are used for non-profit education, criticism such as a review or parody as long as it's a brief excerpt. Fair Use is narrowly defined in section 107 of the Copyright Law. Here is more info: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

You are correct. I will not play attorney. I had originally cited some links, thought better of it and deleted them. I have my reasons and will not post them online. If we ever meet in person, I'll explain over a beer - heck, I'll even buy.

All Copyright cases are subjective and open to interpretation. If you read enough case law, you will find that there are no hard and fast rules about infringement when the issue is similarity. Posting a link to one professor's paper isn't enough.
