MOTU 2408 mkiii with PCI-424 problems on ASUS board

Post by jaymzyates »

I've been using this combo for quite a while, recenelty I upgraded hardware to a Intel P5K-E series MB with a 3.0 Dual Core Processor.

I started with a fresh install of windows. First thing before the hardware is installed, I install the PCI drivers and the audiowire 1.6.6.11 software. I reboot to make sure everything is cool. Then I shutdown and install the card. Start the system up and let windows do its thing while clicking through the unsigned drivers warnings.

Reboot, come back in, go to the PCI audio setup to set my clock, etc.. and where the drop down is to choose the interface, i click, and the app freezes. I click cancel or OK (doesn't matter) and I BSOD or reboot.

This is a fresh Windows XP SP2 install. Ideas?

If anyone runs a P5K-E MB and the MOTU 2408/424 combo, could you let me know?

Tech support was unable to figure my problem out, so it looks like ill be purchasing a new MB/CPU tomorrow. Fairly frustrating.

So it seems an incompability, have you tried to switch the pci slot?
Are you using a PCI slot that is sharing IRQ with anything else?
Google to find "IRQ channels assigment list command" or something like that in order to see the IRQ given to MOTU PCI and see others device's IRQ to see if there is sharing...
I cant recall the command to get to this list. try in device manager aswell.
Maybe is to soon to buy a new MB. unless you have money all over the place... then buy a OTARI MTR100 ;) or Ampex

I believe your problem is you need a Motherboard which supplies +5V to the PCI Slots.

Most new generation Motherboards only supply +3.3V to the PCI Slots.

The MOTU PCI card needs a PCI slot that can deliver +5V

Are you confused with PCIe slots?

Anyone have a MB suggestion? I purchased an nForce 780 sli last weekend because i was talked into it by the cute sales girl.

Got it home and realized I have ZERO need for triple SLI on an audio system (no idea what I was thinking). So I am taking it back today. I was thinking of going quad core... but I'm not sure if that is a good idea yet.

results:

Went out and purchased a DP35DP intel board using a core 2 quad CPU. Fresh install, went through the process again and the same thing happened.

The 424 must have went bad. Sad considering it's not 3 years old yet.

Looks like MOTU can sell you a PCIe Express card to replace your PCIx card:

PCI-424 Compatibility

Information on the compatibility of the PCI-424 card.

The PCI-424 card included with 2408mk3, 24I/O, and HD192 Core Systems is a PCI-X and standard PCI compliant card.
We refer to this card as the "PCIX-424".

The PCI-424 card included with 2408mk3, 24I/O, and HD192 PCI Express Core Systems is compatible with all PCI Express form factors.
We refer to this card as the "PCIe-424".

If your computer uses standard PCI (5V) or PCI-X (3.3V) slots, our PCIX-424 card will be compatible with your system.

If your computer uses only PCI Express (PCIe) slots, such as Apple's Dual-Core Power Mac G5s or Intel Mac Pros, the PCIe-424 card will be compatible with your system and the PCIX-424 card will not be compatible.
Registered users of any MOTU PCI-324 or PCI-424 core system can upgrade to the PCIe-424 card by visiting the MOTU Online Store.

The original PCI-424 (pictured below) was replaced by the PCIX-424 card late in 2003. PCI slots with a 3.3 volt power specification cannot support 5 volt PCI cards such as the original PCI-424. Additionally, the original 424 card will not physically fit into the PCI-X slots found on many new motherboards nor will it fit into any PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro. PC motherboards that utilize dual-processors, hyperthreading, or 64-bit processing will also not likely work with the original 424 card.

Please visit our online store if you wish to upgrade to the PCIX- or PCIe-424 card. If you have any questions regarding the PCIX- or PCIe-424 upgrade please contact MOTU Customer Service at 617 576 2760 (9AM to 6PM Eastern) or .

well you are right, that is the problem. i was fooled! I thought I had a PCIX card per this photo from the motu website.

Image

Notice the slot tab configuration with 1 break. My card has 2 like the PCIX card.

I started looking closer and the date on it is 2002. So motu is missing an image on the website for compatibility.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll just upgrade to the PCI-e[/img]
