when tryin to separate a region in dae using the apple-y command rig crashes continually. complete restart needed, then works a time or to followed by the crash.

I'm using Tiger with 4.6 and it [so far] appears fast, smooth, and crashless [so far]. Do not have DAE.
Have you checked your crash logs to see if it is DP or DAE that is crashing? [e.g., console?]
Also, I guess turning off any sort of menu bar clock seems to be a slick trick for speed and stability.
