Horn Section Samples

Post by madboy »

Anybody know of any great brass and woodwind sample packages. Think Tower of Power, Chase, Blood Sweat and Tears, Woody Herman, Chuck Findly.....

I've had some success with "Quantum Leap Brsss" but I couldn't highly recommend it. I usually end up using some of QL and some of the Emu library that I've converted to Mach Five. Passable but not at all like the real thing!

Perhaps, something better has come out in the past few years.

Check out http://www.soundsonline.com/home.php as a starting point.

Best bet with brass is to get close with the sound, and do the rest with the phrasing and performance idioms by way of a MIDI Wind Instrument, such s the EWI or WX-5. You can make it believable by constantly varying the pitch as brass players do unconsciously, and adding little chirps to the attacks, as well as that vibrato that's unique to brass. Crescendos are also idiomatic; MIDI keyboards just don't do those very well. Aftertouch was never much at a real crescendo. Expression does it better, and Breath does it best if the instrument is programmed for breath. I've found some synthesized trumpets to be as good as samples, if not better, when played with a WX-5.

I think you do need to know the instrument. Maybe a Breath Controller and a sepepate control track or inlflection if you're not a legit' horn player...

I've run into the same thing regarding samples, nothing great out ther. Ilio doesn't have an answer either.

Sounds like a job for RE20/414 boy and his amazing Massenburg front end, create the library.

Thanks folks

Swinging in from a local branch you bring EWF to mind and embarrass me. How could I forget those guys?

Hey SimianRectus, RollingStone Mag' is running a feature, "Growing up Hunter Thompson".
Can you believe it, he's not dead, he's alive, sort of.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...

Chris Hein has a volume two of brass coming out soon, which I think is meant to include sections (if I read his website properly). He is a fan of big band, dixieland, and other styles not preferred by most other vendors, so his library is bound to sound different and perhaos fill a niche for some people.

There was a period when both my WX-7's had gone down, and I had not bought my WX-5 yet. During that time I used a breath controller with my Kurzweil keyboard, and got excellent results. If you can get the hang of tonguing and phrasing with your breath, which does come more naturally to a wind player, you can do well with the breath controller on your keyboard.

It comes in the form of a headset with a little tube extending out front with a flat mouthpiece you can hold in your teeth. The Kurzweil has a BC jack in the back. I don't know how many other keyboards do, but I'd guess that there are a lot.

Absolute gold! These kinds of details make a MIDI performance work of not.

Thanks, Shooshie.

Checked it out, $2495.00 for the 100GB library.
Maybe the library will be broken up into pieces, applicable instruments for specific types/styles of use.
Thanks for the input!
