Sheet Music: Nothing for Something

Post by Frodo »

There are some things that borderline on the ridiculous. This crosses the line-- to the "tune" of $24.99.

$24.99 for the whole score, or just for that very helpful and informative (and may I add, inspiring) page?

Personally, I thought the copyist did a fine job in laying out the staves in question. Quite legible and yet all on one page. Very impressive.

Hehehe... I loved the pickup to the 3/8. It gives you the feel of it, you know. ;)

Piccolo players have all the fun!! :P

npatton-- I'm not sure what the price is for-- it seems low for a score and parts even for Beethoven's Fifth. It's certainly a strange price for the picc part!! LOL!! :P

Back when I was conducting my church orchestra, I had a little trick I'd play on my brass players during rehearsal. If we had a piece where they rested for like the first 72 bars before they came in, we'd start playing from the beginning, and the brass players would meticulously count all the measures. Then when we got to bar 71, I'd stop the rehearsal for a comment. We all had a good chuckle over that. Except for the brass players. For some reason, they didn't appreciate it.

LOL!! That's too funny!

I learned a long time ago to never give musicians more bars to count than they have fingers and toes!

What's really funny about that piccolo part at the link above is that anyone else would have simply put "Tacet".

275 bars with a pickup rest....

My sister-in-law is a piccolo player, and was the piccoloist of the Navy Band in Washington, D.C. She got to sub in the National Symphony a lot, as well as play gigs all over D.C., which exposed her to some of the best conductors in the world. Many of them liked her a lot. Carmen Dragon arranged a piece for her while he was conducting the National Symphony. She was (is) incredible in her ability to sight-read even the most difficult music, perfectly.

I've got a good mind to download that piccolo page and send it to her, mounted and framed, for Christmas.

I wonder if your sister in law performed with the National Symphony when a friend of mine was also there as principal bassist...Harold (Hal) Robinson? Hal left in '95 and is now with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Robinson

Hal was quite the trained bassist (very string oriented musical family background) but was equally at ease playing upright bass on a country session. Big baseball fan...at the time hated the LA Dodgers 'cause they always seemed to have the Astros' number then.

I'll have to ask her sometime, Buzz. I don't know if she would know him, but she just might. He sure ended up in a great place!
