RAM on a macbook c2d - 3GB?

Post by vier-personen »

hi, I am mixing a project with 20 audio tracks and it seems that it‘s time to upgrade my RAM - but I am not an expert so help would be appreciated a lot:

how much ram does my macbook core2duo 2.0ghz support?
2 gigs (apple site) or 3 gigs (as I read here http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/M ... R2/Upgrade)
of course I believe apple knows what their machines support, but who knows....

if so, what about the story that it‘s not good to have ram sticks with different sizes (in this case it would be 1 & 2 gigs)?

my final question - is kingston any good and would these 2 be a good match:
http://geizhals.at/a223173.html
http://geizhals.at/a169027.html
is the prize for the 1gig to good to be true (35•‚¬)?

if my macbook supports only 2 gigs, is it better to put in 1x 2gigs or 2x 1gig?

You have to dump your current RAM and install two 1GB's.
The Arsenal:
DP 4.6 | OSX 10.4.8 | G5 Dual 1.8 | 4 GB RAM
Omega 8 | MPC2500 | Moog LP | API A2D | SM7
UAD | Waves SSL | RME Multiface 2 |KRK V6

thanks for the reply...
that much I knew, but I am curious about the 2gb vs 3gb issue...

interresting...

form the apple site:

"1GB (two 512MB SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300); two SO-DIMM slots support up to 2GB"

if I understand correctly, this means that the macbook supports 2 GB max?
also in the apple store custom configurations up to 2GB are possible.

but if it‘s possible to run 3GB as auptown says, could it be that it‘s only possible to upgrade to 2GB in the apple store, but that the macbook actually supports more?

auptown, does the about this mac window actually say 3GB of memory?

Yes, my fault also, I didn't read "MacBook" (no Pro!)

For the record, I have a 1G and a 2G chip installed in my MBP, all is working great. The 2G chip came from OWC.

The MacBook Pro can technically handle 4GBs, but will only address 3GB (firmware update will address this).

The MacBook (non-Pro) will only address 2GB.

Hope that clears it up.

OWC claims the MacBook uses up to 3GB, and further claim that mismatched sticks do no harm. On the other hand, they DO sell RAM, don't they?

They are right, the new June 2007 macbook can handle up to 3 GB of ram.

Regarding the "matched sticks" it is a question about sync. or async. dual channel mode, it would be VERY interesting to see tests* on 2x1, 2+1, 2x2 (yeah you can overfill it, though firmware only allocates 3gb, but you get the sync. dual channel mode here, that you dont get with 2+1).

Though there is a huge chance/risk (dep. on where you are comin from) that the sync. dual channel mode will be more beneficial when it comes to recording plug-in processing as it is a question about how fast the data is transfered between logic board and memory.

*= DAW tests I mean here, other tests can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_B ... e_MacBook/

Anyone?
