Ethno iLok authorisation

Post by beatpoet »

Thinking about buying ethno, just wondering about the iLok authorisation key, do I need to have this in my machine EVERY time I run ethno or just for inital authorisation ?

Currently running a macbook and all my USB ports are used up at present.

The iLok has to be plugged in every time you open Ethno, or every time you start DP. Once the application has opened the iLok can be removed.

:(

That's a bit of a pain, looks like ethno's out then, don't like running my main controllers off a hub.

If you have multiple iLok-authorized plug-ins, you can consolidate the authorizations from each iLok onto a single iLok. Go to http://www.ilok.com and check it out.

Thanks, but ethno would be my first iLok product. Any similar products around that don't require USB keys.

As far as I know, all of the other general-purpose ethno instruments require either iLok or Synchrosoft keys.

You might find individual instruments that don't require a USB key, such as "Darbuka"(?). That's just guesswork on my part.

Unfortunately for you, there is no getting around the trend towards USB keys. They really aren't such an annoyance for the most part, and in some ways give you more flexibility in terms of multiple mcahines.

But I'm with you on the USB power issue. I am probably causing my USB keys to have a diminished lifespan by constantly pulling them out and plugging them back in so that I can use the printer or my Korg MS-20 controller. Newer computers have more USB ports buuilt in though.

I'm just worried about the performance issues using my main controllers through a hub.

On an intel macbook myself so only 2 usb ports to play with on the lappy.

I find I have no problem with plugging in the iLok on startup, and then replacing it with my Novation USB controller after the app has loaded (this on a MacBook Pro). I don't want to use a hub with this setup either.

I find the iLok brilliant for the way I work. I use a G5 at home, a MacBook Pro on the road, and I can use my programs on computers at other studios when I mix............. total flexibility............

kind regards

Yes; even though Sound-On-Sound gave it a lukewarm review (saying it was great for looping, which I never use, but not very impressive for single-strike samples), I still feel it's the best thing out there as a catchall for a large number of otherwise hard-to-find instruments. And personally I feel the percussion is first-class and better than many of the alternatives.

One would have to buy quite a few specialty libaries to collect all the melodic instruments covered here. Note that east/west's "RA" has very little overlap. From the on-line demos of that program and "Ethno World" plus others at the east/west site, I am not terribly impressed as they seem very Hollywood-oriented; whereas MOTU Ethno is general-purpose, mostly dryly recorded, and much easier to sit in a mix than other ethnic libraries that I have tried over the years (including those from Ensoniq and E-Mu).

As far as I know iLok is one of the best ways to stop piracy. There are hacks and crack for audio software but not so many for iLok-protected apps.
And ethno has some really nice sounds and loops. It is very buggy (specially with loops and phrases) but I found my way around it.
Bought it for fun.. but it has already brought a lot more in than its cost.
