favorite 2 tier stand?

Post by KarlSutton »

I'm on a silly quest to find the best 2 tier keyboard stand. The one I use now is an On Stage X stand. It's heavy duty & soldi but the second tier is higher than I would prefer. Any suggestions?

I use an Ultimate Apex 48B. It's a column stand.
Very nice on stage for playing while standing (I'm a singer).

I bought some spare parts to get 3 heights choice : sitting, standing, laptop shelve.
And some sort of little tidy-fixing parts for all those running wires.

And a mic boom (nice one).

Very happy with that.

One problem with Apex is the way the stand's legs interferre with pedals. I got around this issue by crafting a carpet-covered plywood platform that fits around the stand and sits on top of the legs, giving me a flat place to place my pedals and plant my feet. Otherwise, if you don't mind a little keyboard bounce, Apex works fine, especially for live use as it looks nice and packs compactly.

I used to have a two-tier Standtastic that was ugly, but otherwise really great. Lost it after 10+ years of heavy use. I would still be using it if it didn't melt when my studio burned. No keyboard bounce as they advertise, and the tier height is completely adjustable. The one I had was sort of tall, but once I figured out how high I wanted my top tier, I simply cut the main aluminum support bars accordingly with a hacksaw. It was easy to set up and tear down, folded up quite efficiently, and was not too heavy. I would buy another one today if I hadn't purchased the Apex on a whim.

If bucks are no object, get one of those cool remote-comtrol height-adjustable stands, recently reviewed in Keyboard Mag. Would be excellent in the studio, but set up looks like it would be a bit of a pain for gig use.

Quiklock stands have been my most reliable. I tend to sit while I play unless it is a theater gig and i have to access all sorts of stuff.

For stability, I've loved the old Ultimate Support "Invisible" Stand. Rock solid, top tier flat and immediately above the lower one. Not great for sitting unless you don't mind a tall stool. Unfortunately breaks down into four separate pieces that are a bit unwieldly. Not sure if it's still being made, but worth looking at.

I've never tried it with a larger 88-key set-up. For that I picked up a used Quiklock two-tier that I love, but the top tier is a lot higher than the lower (although the angle can be adjusted down a bit). Also rock solid. For more formal gigs, I drape a black sheet over the stand to hide the "plumbing" of the x-brace.

I believe Quiklock is now gone. Tried to get a replacement wheel for one of their carts and found that they've been bought and their website is now run out of Italy and all the links are dead.

Hope this helps!

I like this one for some reason. Very solid, strangely cheap.

Looks solid, but I hope you like the height and tier separation!

Probably better for sitting than standing. . .
