Disappearing Hard Drive
Two days ago my system drive on my laptop disappeared from the Desktop + Finder. A day later my system drive disappeared from my G5. Both are PPC.
All of my information was available (obviously, because I could boot up the machines) and I could even access the hard drives through Spotlight, I just couldn't navigate to it through the Desktop or Finder. Weird.
So I did a full re-install on my laptop and the problem went away.....for a day, then it disappeared again.
I went crazy......
but I found a solution in case anyone else has this issue. It seems to have something to do with 10.4.9 and Native Instruments Samplers that have their own file browser. Apple did something that allowed NI Samplers to make the system drive invisible.
So, if this happens to you go download Pathfinder:
http://www.cocoatech.com/
Open the software, navigate to your hard disk within Pathfinder. Ctrl-Click to Get Info, go to attributes and unselect "Invisible". Quit Pathfinder, Restart and then watch your hard drive reappear. I nearly crappe myself when it came back. This is the ONLY thing that will fix it. I even attempted changing the Invisible bit through the Terminal, that didn't work.
I really just wanted to share this so that others may not go through the hell I went through last weekend.
Best,
Dan

Thanks for sharing that, slicerecords.
Last week someone on the forum said that "Cocktail" (the maintenance app) was responsible for the same "syndrome" in 10.4.9.
For this reason, I've held off on the upgrade, as I use (but don't drink) Cocktail every day.
Again, thank you slicerecords; this may be the answer to both causes.

responsible?
Hey all,
I have Kontakt 2, and upgraded to DP 5.12, the second that I upgraded, the Hard drive disappeared. It has done that now on three occasions since I have fixed it using pathfinder. It's unbelievably frustrating. Pathfinder is not a free program (i know it's not exactly expensive, by any means), but on principle alone, why are the users held responsible to shell out the cash to fix a problem that was created by the developers, whether it is native instruments or apple, or whomever? Shouldn't the people at fault be held responsible for the fix? or maybe even just acknowledge that there is an issue. My free trial period for pathfinder expired, and I did a little searching and found a script edit to fix the issue. For those that don't want to purchase Pathfinder to fix this absurd issue, this is the simple script edit that you can do.
in the script editor type:
tell application "System Events"
set visible of disk "name of your hard drive" to true
end tell
tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to launch
then, click run, and all should be well. Just as an extra bit of advice, where it says name of your hard drive, type the actual name of the missing drive in the quotes, not "name of your hard drive".....
(I used to make that mistake.... silly.)
Hope that helps.

I've had the same problem with the disappearing HD icons, but since I have upgraded to Kontakt 2.2.3 I don't think that I have seen it happen.

Just wanted to put in a word that the same was happening to me on 10.4.8. I was about to post a topic when I saw this thread and Pathfinder worked. Also, on the pathfinder site it said the demo is for 21 days of actual use- if you don't launch it, it doesn't reduce your days left. So if you only launch it when you need your hard drive back, that's at least 21 times until it's time to buy it or use the script AriWinters posted!

Hey MLC- it was actually more troublesome than that- for example, when I had my 2 computers networked, I had no ability to mount the Harddrive level of this computer. The login would say "check the items you want to mount" and I would choose it, but it never showed up anywhere on the guest computer. So if I wanted to drag a preset file from one application folder to another, I could only do it by going to the culprit computer and uploading it to the guest, not the other way around.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:I guess I'm lucky I don't show HD icons on my desktop
