PCI 324 and Mac OSX resolved yet?
Hey guys,
First post here.
This is a topic that seemed to garner a lot of attention around 2003, judging from Google searches.
Anyway, I'm looking to pick up a used 2408 for use with my Radar II and Mac G4. I'm running OS 10.3.9
Have the issues with the 324 been resolved or should I try to find one with a 424 card?

My G4 dual 800 constantly panicked with the PCI-324 installed. The 424 fixed it. I still have that 324 packed away in its box...
Kind regards.
Kind regards.

Honestly... the 324 card is pushing toward resolution. The resolution being that sooner or later it's going to be useless, and you would be wise to find a 424 card. I would not expect that MOTU is going to be working hard to try and keep that card working as Apple continues to upgrade the OS.

For What It Is Worth:
I have a PCI 324 in a Quicksilver rev 1 OS 10.4.10 -- I HAVE NEVER HAD A PCI-324 related Kernel Panic. It works like a charm!
Additionally, I ALSO have a PCI 324 in a G4 Sawtooth machine OS 10.3.8 -- I HAVE NEVER HAD A PCI-324 related Kernel Panic. It too works like a charm!
Just repeating -- I have never had a PCI-324 related Kernel Panic with my 10.3.x or 10.4.x machines.
I remember all those threads too -- I suspect that Apple fixed something in 10.3 somewhere along the line.
--
I would aim for at least a 2408mkII -- sounds better than the original 2408, better interfacing options.
On the other hand - picking up a system with a PCI-X 424 would give you cuemix, and allow you to at somepoint move it into one of the earlier dual G5 machines that have PCI-X slots.
Whichever you do -- make sure you get a seller who is willing to TRANSFER OWNERSHIP to you with MOTU* That way, you will be able to purchase an upgrade for the card to whatever crazy slot format the PC world goes to next (currently PCI-e).
*basically all they have to do is email motu and tell them they sold it to you. There are instructions on the MOTU site.

MOTU still supports the PCI-324, but it is no longer possible for them to service or replace them. Basically, if your PCI-324 breaks, you will have no choice but to buy another one second-hand or upgrade to the PCI-424.James Steele wrote:Honestly... the 324 card is pushing toward resolution.
