FLAC to mp3 converter?

Post by Babz »

Can anyone recommend a good FLAC to mp3 converter? It would be nice if it would maintain the metadata (song, artist, album, etc.)

I don't often have to deal w/ the FLAC format. I used to use All2mp3 for conversion, but one problem is that it doesn't transfer over the meta data. Also, it appears to be no longer supported and has been hijacked by another site that tries to get you to update and then installs malware or adware.

Thx,
Babz

You can use Audacity.

My favorite for this kind of thing is Fission (Rogue Amoeba)

In case anyone happens upon this thread from search, for Windows systems I use Foobar2000 for conversions now. Very easy, very customizable.

TwistedWave absolutely rules for just about any type of audio conversion. As a batch converter, I've never used anything close. I routinely convert FLAC to Apple Lossless-mp4a and/or 320k for my iPhone. Yes, there's a check box for keeping 3rd party metadata intact.

https://twistedwave.com/mac.html

Among its many tricks is that you can do a batch conversion on many folders at once with the mp3s put into their original folders or a new folder if you want. Batch conversion is not intuitive but, once you've done it, the process is very quick and extremely easy.

Sometimes online resellers will have it at a better price than the $79 directly from the site above.

DSP-Q does batch audio conversion but I've never seen FLAC in the file types. Toast supports FLAC conversion but it's convoluted without burning a CD as part of the process.

One more little plug for Fission which does have a batch converter as well. It only does format conversion in the batch. You can edit tags in the app though, which is handy. Fission also let's you edit & split mp3's without re-encoding which is awfully nice.

iTunes is a little better for batch tag edits, but it's a little wonkier in that it doesn't always work right.
