GarageBand now Free

Post by cuttime »

I've always had it on all my Macs, but the only thing I ever used it for was to test a misbehaving AU plug. Am I missing something?
Also on iOS. Same for iMovie, Numbers, Keynote and Pages.

The only times I have used GB was when I had a client who ONLY had GB or with younger students. It is what it is. Oh yea, I've tested a fussy AU with it as well. But I NEVER go to it to make things. Not even on iOS.

When Mavericks/iOS 7 (?) was released, there was a grace period where iWork and GB were free — if you acted quickly—that window was open a few weeks only. At the same time, iWork was dumbed down to the iOS level. :shake:

Apparently, all of those apps are now free. They still suck.

If you have Logic, there's no need for GB.

I use the GB Instruments in iOS to play (13 frets on the bass on a 12.9" iPad Pro) but never record or do anything else in it.

One daughter uses it, however, but not the composer who uses Logic.

Yes, it's free. And worth every penny.

Remember that the sole purpose of those apps is to sell Apple hardware.

If you're talking to a newbie who wants to record his/her 3 piece jam or bluegrass band, are you going to recommend Audacity for Mac or GB?

If they're going to buy an interface, I recommend MOTU and AutoDesk but, otherwise, if it's a USB mic or iRig or other simple setup, I tell them to learn GB.

Sometimes, like my daughter, she goes on to Logic. It doesn't matter how often she has watched Dad fly through an edit/mix session in DP. Her husband's an Apple engineer and it's the devil she knows.

GB itself is pointless if you have any DAW. But some of its patches sometimes might fit where it is difficult to find the right sound. A composer I work with does his tracks in GB, and sometimes I end up just leaving his GB sound in place because there is nothing else I can find that is noticeably better at a reasonable cost.

MOTU posted an article on their site on how to access GB sounds with DP.

Exactly. They don't include it for us.

The Soundflower link is dead but it's easy to find. The .pdf link at the bottom is still good.

Better to get MainStage than GB-- IMHO. I end up using it here & there.
