That's how the song begins. I'm just wondering what "revved up like a deuce" means. Google translation doesn't work on this one.

We must have different Googles. There are a zillion references to this. Here's one:

The original Springsteen Lyric is "Cut Loose like a deuce" as a few have mentioned above. However, if you have ever lived in the Jersey/New York area (Springsteen's home) you would know that "Cut loose like a deuce" is a common slang phrase to describe dumping your girlfriend or boyfriend or to describe anything you want to get rid of, as in "Thrown away like a low card in draw poker" (deuce = 2, as Chris said) eg:

There are a lot more, not all the same.

I grew up in the Manhattan/Greater New York area and never heard the references mentioned. Good to know what the damn lyrics mean. Now, what about those knights in white satin? Is that a Monty Python reference? LOL

I always figured that "deuce," in this context, was a deuce coupe, i.e., a hot rodded Chevy II.

If it does mean dumping something or someone, I'd figure the reference would be to defecation, i.e., "dropping a deuce," going number 2," etc.

If I ever run into Bruce Springsteen again, I'll ask him what he meant when he wrote that. The car sounds most plausible to me—Brian Wilson wrote about a Little Deuce Coupe, after all.

Now that our mothers have passed, highly unlikely. They lived close to each other in Redwood City and we'd cross paths now and then. Yes, the Boss ran errands for Mom when in town.

"Deuce" is what he's supposed to be saying, but that's not what Mannfredd Mann is
actually saying. I stand by that, and nothing anybody says will change my mind! Possibly an instance of a mondegreen? Or perhaps a different class of misunderstood lyrics altogether? Perhaps a deliberately distorted lyric intended to be heard differently than originally intended? Is there a word for that?

Someone who has access to the original album on vinyl maybe also has the lyrics? I only have the "20 years of..." on CD.

When I listen I hear "Wrapped up like a deuce". Wrapped up like a looser in some kind of bodybag?
