Thanks for the heads-up!

Fortunately, I had downloaded a version maybe a month ago. But sheesh, too bad they can get hit like that. Glad to see they are taking it seriously!

Yikes. I see that the Mac version is not affected but still... That's bad and I hate to see the drain on their resources.

I've not looked at it in years but do recommend Audacity/Win to students who want to dip their toes into the world of digital multitrack recording before making the commitment to a professional DAW (for Mac OS, I recommend GarageBand).

Same here. I do recommend Audacity as a kind of catch all audio editor since it does format conversion, dithering, has an extensive plugin collection, does pitch & tempo stuff fairly well, and has a reasonably good Noise Reduction as well.

Would love to see the spectral editing continue to evolve in Audacity.

I deleted Audacity years ago, after upgrading from BIAS Peak LE to BIAS Peak Pro. I consider Audacity to be one of the most dangerous products I have ever used, as it works at all times on a live buffer (the file on disc) and has no undo capacity either. If it crashes, kiss your data bye-bye forever.

It is too difficult to remember to always make a copy of a file before editing it. This is how we (developers, that is) worked in the 80's, but as it is no longer how we work, as developers or users, when an app comes along that still behaves that way, it is extremely difficult to remember to treat it differently -- especially in the heat of battle.

Perhaps those two fatal flaws were finally addressed. Last I checked, they weren't.

My recollection is that iZotope RX supports the largest number of audio file formats of anything besides Audacity, but maybe you have to spend big bucks for the pro edition (which I have).

I don't use Audacity often, but it does have Undo now, and a preference to have it work on a copy instead of the live file.

Bill, thanks for the update on Audacity addressing its two biggest flaws recently.

I'll be sure to tell all the newbies, as that's the first app most people go for. Several people at work and even my bandleader (he doesn't do multi-track recording so is a newbie when it comes to audio software). I had warned them about the live editing and lack of undo, so now I know to tell them to go to the special preferences to change the defaults from unsafe to safe.

I've only ever used it to reconvert my iTunes library to 320k mp3 (it uses LAME) after discovering how smeared and dull the iTunes conversion sounded.

Tip: Listen to your conversions before spending months or years converting an entire library!

I found Audacity to be fantastic for this; it hasn't crashed yet in 10 years, although, as I suggested, I've not explored the app other than for the purpose of the conversions.
