What does the "Pre" stand for?

Post by Tomas E »

I've noticed that some audio interfaces of different brands have partly the same designation, that is "Pre". What does it stand for?

All the ones I know have microphone preamps built in. I assume that's what it stands for.

Are there any that don't?

There are several interfaces that don't have the "Pre" label but still have mic preamps. For instance the MOTU 896 Mk3 Hybrid.

Yes but that wasn't my point.

The 4pre has 4 mic preamps; the 8pre has eight. That's the main selling feature.

The only one I can think of is Mic Pre-Amp, as Mike said. (this isn't a mixing board we're talking about, which WOULD have a different meaning: pre-fader and post-fader)

Usually it is associated with the input gain and 48v phantom power switch.

What device are you looking at, and how is it using "Pre?" Is it by a jack or a knob or a switch?

Since there were a number of interfaces named Pre I just wanted to know if there could be some american/english shortening that I didn't know of. I've been assuming it had to do with preamps but I became unsure as the naming was inconsistent. /Thank you both!

I presume we are, predictably and as a prerequisite, not presenting products produced predominantly by Presonus.

Just sayin', as our furry-footed friend Frodo might add.

Thanks Frodo, for reinvigorating this nearly prehistoric thread. :deadhorse:

This pre-existing thread may have predated Frodo's visit, but his response perfectly prepended previous content without precluding future precocious remarks which may be precessing about its axis even now.

I had to look up "prepended." And "precessing."

Preposterous!

Thanks for the vocab lesson Shoosh! :D
